Shipping companies in the Northeast. They didn't get bent out of shape over slavery until the south banned importation of slaves. After there was no more money in it they all magically became abolitionists.

The premise can't be correct. According to our family genealogical research, my ancestors ran a slave ship from the Horn of Africa, through Bermuda and to a port on the coast of North Carolina, and we are English. Unless the English ran 100% of the slave ships, the premise is wrong.

Actually any group that could participate in African slavery did. Americans, British, Dutch, French, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.
The African slave trade predates the European phase with overland shipping of slaves to Muslim African and Middle Eastern peoples. Europeans were slaves for this group as well.
The only constant was that the unfortunates were captured, enslaved, and sold to the final non sub Saharan customers by other sub Saharan black Africans.
