Speaking as a humanities major who is a rare conservative in academia, I have always theorized that STEM did not kill the liberal arts and humanities as much as it was a suicide.

I read an article that agrees with me.

LINK

What in the world happened to the liberal arts? A degree in the humanities used to transmit the knowledge and wisdom imbued in the works of great Western artists, writers, musicians and thinkers like Shakespeare and Mozart. But today, that same degree stresses Western racism, sexism, imperialism, and other ills and sins that reinforce a sense of victimhood and narcissism. So, what happened?

To get a bachelor’s degree in English literature at the University of California at Los Angeles, one of the most prestigious colleges in America, you must take courses in Gender, Race, Ethnicity, Disability or Sexuality Studies; in Imperial Transnational or Post-Colonial Studies; and in Critical Theory. But you are not required to take a single course in Shakespeare.

Liberal arts is a useless area of study.

A Classical Education has many benefits. None of which are being taught today.

For example, well rounded Humanities majors typically make great doctors.

From the AMA:
Matriculants who majored in biological sciences had a mean MCAT of 31 and GPA of 3.69. Humanities majors had a mean MCAT of 31.8 and GPA of 3.66.

However, narcissistic professors are churning out worthless graduates in the name of feminism and social justice.

I'd whip my kid's arse if they wanted to waste my money at a liberal arts college...or on a liberal arts degree.

That is less the function of the subject and more a function of the people.

This kind of thought is not that popular outside of Louisiana's weird obsession with having to become an engineer.

No it's not, but jobs are much more specialized now than they were 30 years ago. Corporations have determined there is limited benefit in well-rounded-ness . It's all about specialization.

Cost is the main factor for me. Only idiots are going into liberal arts if they actually have to pay for college.

Specialization that, outside of very few available academic fields, one learns on the job or independently.

The way we have our school-skill-job pipeline is completely moronic and inefficient.

For the 50th time on this board. A LA Degree is not a major. In essence, it's a double major.
Centenary is a liberal arts college. If you major in premed you have two required tracks to complete simultaneously:

Biology
Liberal Arts

The Biology majors went on to med school at a 100% acceptance rate. But they had to take:
Western Civ
Philosophy
Geology
Speech/Communications
4 years of Lit
Origins of New Testament
etc, etc, etc.... courses that had ZERO to do with biology or medicine.

Why? Because it's a liberal arts degree. It means you have to take a wide range of subjects outside of your major. You are NOT a Liberal Arts major. You have a Liberal Arts degree with a Major in Premed.

I guess the reason this is hard to understand is that some colleges may actually have a Major called Liberal Arts. I don't know. Terms change. But if you are a physicist who graduated from Centenary you have a Liberal Arts Degree.

This. You go to college to learn how to do something. If you go for business school, your co-op or internship is more important than your GPA.

Hardly.

The purpose of going to college isn't to get a job. It's to become educated. Employers want educated people. Do you really want to live in a country where no one studies literature, philosophy, theology, art history, languages? That's ridiculous.
