re: Who is the greatest US president of all time?

quote:

Kennedy and Eisenhower are exactly how a President should look in modern politics imo. Their Presidency didn't exist to promote a particular agenda- they simply lead the nation and in a very positive way.

Spot on.

Caesar Augustus ended 100 years of civil war, personally reigned over a half century of peace in an empire that stretched nearly as far as Hitler's two thousand years later, and instituted a regime that would not fall for nearly fifteen centuries.

May be one of the most overstated, unsubstantiated claim about the Reagan legacy. The USSR collapsed due to the failure of the communist system...Reagan just happened to be in office as it melted down.

The cold war was a conflict between two economic systems.
Reagan used ours to crush theirs.
It was masterful.

It was centerpiece to his efforts.
It is a significant component of his legacy.
Reagan laid it out as a goal when he entered office.
He pushed the country toward that end. He succeeded in ways unimaginable at the time. Then he rubbed the USSR's Communist noses in it with his Berlin Speech.

Kind of like saying Napoleon's armies collapsed due to the failure of the French system...Wellington had nothing to do with it, he just happened to be in Waterloo at the time.

Sorry, I'm not fluent enough in the ExtremeChicagoDemocrat dialect to adequately do that.

You positive about that? Julius Caesar ended the civil war between him and Pompey, which is how Caesar ended up as Dictator for Life. The war afterward over the throne wasn't 100 years long. I'm not seeing the 100 year civil war.

I could be wrong. I'm not very well schooled on ancient Roman history.

What the hell does that even mean?

I'm just interested in why you think Genghis Khan didn't build the Mongol Empire.

re: Who is the greatest US president of all time?

Lincoln was our greatest president. Without his resolve this nation would have separated into two.

Washington was the greatest American, to be sure. Without his own bit of determination there would not have been a United States, but if we're only judging their jobs as President, then Lincoln.

OK, that might have been confusing.... so here it is again. Washington was the greatest American to serve as President. Lincoln did the best job as President.

I like this post Rex.

Lincoln - Most Significant President
Washington - Greatest American
Jefferson - Our greatest advocate of freedom

re: Who is the greatest US president of all time?
quote:

People on here that claim FDR was a terrible President need not to view him through the lens of the 21st Century, but look at what was needed at the time(and yes, social programs were greatly needed at the time- unemployment was around 30%). FDR responded and restored confidence in the government and America in general

This. The alternatives weren't between FDR and conservatism. The latter was viewed by many as what got the country into the mess it was in. The nation was just not going to elect a pro-business Republican in the 1930's, much like the Bush hangover of the 2000's.

The alternatives were between FDR and something much more radical. Probably a home-grown form of Fascism or Communism. Plenty of would-be leaders were waiting in the wings ready to do do just that.

He was far from perfect, and he did lots of things worthy of criticism, but he saved America.

re: Who is the greatest US president of all time?
I'm sure about that. The civil wars started before the First Triumvirate. The discord over the Gracchi eventually led to civil war between Marius and Sulla near when Julius Caesar was born. From approximately the year 100 to 32 BC, the Roman state was essentially in constant civil war. Sulla twice brought his army to Rome, something Caesar copied decades later. The Social War in the 80s BC tore Italy apart leading to the nobles seizing the opportunity to take land, forming giant latifundia. The First Triumvirate of Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus was meant to hold peace in that period of conflict. It did not start it. Eventually, The death of Crassus and Julia Caesar broke up the alliance, leading to the civil wars most people know best. Caesar was appointed dictator, and left turmoil that his adopted son took nearly two decades to completely eradicate.
