The first victims of sex crimes by powerful/respected people who speak out are often attacked and not believed. "They just want money, attention, etc." So victims just keep their mouths shut instead of being subjected to that.

But once a few come forward and the public starts to believe, other victims feel safe in coming forward.

You see it in cases of child molesters, Bill Cosby, and the like.
