When did the singular goal in politics become to vanquish your enemies?

That's what I see nowadays, but mostly on the right. The hard right refuses to recognize that there is any acceptable goal short of total victory. Compromise is defeat. Even on this board, we get posts calling out "RINOs" and "cucks" and other stupid shite like that. (I am evidently one of those.)
Democrats make up at least half the population of America. Even Reagan acknowledged that they aren't going anywhere.

The Freedom Caucus's goal was not to "vanquish its enemies." That's fake news speak. The GOPe wanted a sucky bill to go through to make them look good. Trump went along with this. The Freedom Caucus saw the damage it would do and did the right thing for the country, not themselves.

When was politics invented?

Sometime around the start of the Hyborian Age.

I never said it did you retard. My statement implied the opposite.

I'll go with Marcus Tullius Cicero.

Probably hit high gear around the time Lincoln went to war with his own country.

I guess everyone has been reading Carl Schmitt recently.

I think the "YAY TEAM"/"MY TEAM GOOD, YOUR TEAM EVIL" became the main driver in 1998 - Clinton's impeachment.
Then the 2000 election completely sealed it.
Those two events with 24 hour news channels and short news cycle = "YAY TEAM"/"MY TEAM GOOD, YOUR TEAM EVIL".

Pick up a damn book and read it. There is the history of this country and the history of modern civilization. America is tame with its political history even with the civil war.

It's always been that way. Especially with failing democracies. Look at Soviet Union. Stalin killed many of his political enemies so he vanquished them.

It has to do with the insane religious people taking over the GOP.
quote:
“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.” - Barry M. Goldwater
