We know that one path - fighting for the side that wasn't enslaving them - led to such things as the post-surrender massacre at the Battle of the Crater under the obviously honorable General Lee. LINK So what SHOULD they have done?

"During"? The best option was to get the hell out of the South and stay away. But options were pretty limited.

I'd love to answer you question and I thought I had an immediate answer. Probably one you'd agree with.

But, as I re-read, I can't tell for sure I understand what you're asking.

Can you restate?

Into the north where slavery was legal even after the war?

What are you asking? What the blacks who got massacred should have done?

I'm not clear on your question.

Sure. The thrust is that we are subject to the continued lionization of General Lee - honorable this and honorable that. Yet his primary task was to ensure the continued enslavement and/or destruction of the most innocent bystander of all: the slave. So I really want to know: for the lionizers, what should a slave have done? Why so few statues to them?

Shame slaves never got to form a union in those days...

Really? Honestly, how often, if he isn't brought up by whiny leftists, does the subject of Robert E. Lee really come up these days?

But, OK. He's generally portrayed as honorable although history always has a tendency to gloss things over.

Done back then? This is the part of your question that I'm not getting.

Are you calling current blacks slaves and asking current blacks should do?

Are you asking what blacks back then should have done? If that's the question, I can answer it. But, I don't wan to guess.

As to few statues. Well, they didn't build a lot of statues of nameless Soldiers. They never do. At any time in history.

depends on the individual. im sure a black slave and a black master would have contradicting answers to your question.

I'm sorry I can't answer your question until StrongSafety shows up to explain to me the proper response.

No, of course not.

Well, I'm not sure that's true. But in any event, if the people that were massacring (I think that form is correct!) the truly innocent are lionized and remembered as heroes, what could the massacred have possibly done that would have earned them any status? Seems like monument-building priorities are woefully out of whack with morality.

Probably nothing.

While there are exceptions. There aren't a whole lot of statues of nameless people no one knows.

Then propose new monuments.

What's your point? There's no law limiting the number of monuments one can build. I mean, I guess there's a technical limit in space and resources. But, statues aren't really that expensive.

I mean, if you're saying, "hey, they didn't build a lot of statues of black men way back when they were building confederate statues".........the obvious reply is........well no shite.

Great. Build statues you'd like to see.

That doesn't require the stupidity currently going on and nothing precludes it.

Vote for local leaders that will build statues that make you feel good.

I think there are way more than you are giving credit for, but in any event, there were any number of heroic slaves/blacks that could be lionized. Why aren't there statues of Frederick Douglass all over the south? In what world is Lee the superior of FD?

Nah, not a fan.

The point is, let's not act like the preponderance of the rebel statues around the south are something they aren't. At the very least, let's not care too much if voters decide they are to be removed. Let's remember exactly what they represent.

Probably not head up North into the race riots. I don't know, Go West Young Man?
