re: What NOT to say during Black History Month

quote:

sure, but at a 90%+ rate?

it's hard to find/create any group that will vote for a party at that rate.

No I meant add up all of the people who blindly vote Democrat (let me just assume and give you a large percentage of blacks for this discussion's sake, in addition to others of course) and compare it with the people who blindly vote GOP (religious zealots, etc) and they probably cancel out.

There has to be some people thinking and actually critically analyzing the candidates before voting, right? And I argue they are roughly equivalent on both sides.

Politicians are opportunists, media is biased and the voting public is ignorant. We deserve what we have.

again, SURE

but it's hard to create a group within either party that supports either party at such a high rate

re: What NOT to say during Black History Month
Black folks probably don't feel that Reps are speaking to them on issues they want to hear. They have been sold a bill of goods as the Federal Govt as their protector and I don't see how the Republican party can change that, even though the R's have done little to give anyone the idea that they are a threat to the rights given to minorities.

The often heard theme of "rolling back the civil rights act" and such has been effective, even though there is no truth to it.

re: What NOT to say during Black History Month

based on what, exactly?

It ranges from some posters flat our arguing that black people are inherently less intelligent and may even have a "violence" gene to insinuations that all blacks who voted for Obama wanted to keep getting their "free stuff/phones" or were simply blindly following, among others. I've even read blacks referred to as "Negroes" on this board before. Like seriously, where do they still use that term?

I'm not here trying to argue that conservatives are racist or anything like that. Not at all actually. Being from BR, some of my best friends come from families of die-hard GOPers. I just know that I cringe and shake my head more on this board when it comes to race than some liberal boards I peruse. Not really an objective scientific study of course, so just take that FWIW.

no. EUROPE needed it more. who do you think was buying our products abroad? without their demand for our goods, we wouldn't have had slavery. they would have had more slavery, and later, and their societal movement would not have occurred. it's kind of shitty for them to look down on us while buying the products made available due to slaves

Slavery was a part of our production model. We didn't maintain slave labor because Europe "needed" anything. We did it to keep costs low and maximize volume and profit. I'm sure Europe benefitted, but we didn't do shite because "they needed it more".

1. There's no way to predict anything in these silly historical counter-factuals. Who knows when Europe would have abolished slavery. Alexander II freed the serfs when it didn't make any real sense to do so.

2. Maybe shitty of them to look down on us, but there is a distinction to be made. I buy products made in China, but that doesn't mean I don't look down on the bastard who runs a sweatshop. That degree of separation matters.

I agree, but, for example, Jews and especially Asians nowadays are also very heavily Democratic. Asians voted over 70% Dem. Not quite as much as blacks, sure, but that is still astonishing imo. Who knows, if it was an Asian democratic president they might have approached the 90%ish range. How is this done by democrats? I am no political strategist which is why I am legitimately curious.

Why do the other minority groups vote Dem? Same reason?

that's typically just CT, and he cites studies. argue the studies if you want.

i think they argue that tehre is a large population who did do this.

I haven't discussed the why, just the completely different historical environments that you comnpared.

I wouldn't be surprised if many more blacks are attacked/killed by whites in Europe (from the Atlantic to the Urals) than in the US. Not proportionately but in real numbers. I read that one year over 40 blacks were killed by gangs of whites in Russia (not dometic violence attacks based upon race). The Trayvon killing by a Hispanic was major news here, you think we have many blacks killed in the US by whites in racial attacks.

Far fewer Negores more violent attacks doesn't seem to make for a less racist continent.

if Europe didn't have the demand for our goods, we wouldn't have used slaves to produce those goods for that price

you're right. if America didn't do it, europe may not have, but SOMEBODY would have due to the massive demand for the products

but these same hypotheticals are a favorite of race baiters like VB and i shouldn't have used it in the same way

i don't look down on him. sweatshops are great opportunities for those workers. we can't compare our standards to their standards

Women and gays? Of course.

You have heard the rhetoric. The GOP is losing the propaganda war, period..which is all this "divide and conquer" political game has become. There is little substance and it's pure fantasy. This pie in the sky political campaign has been an utter failure to most people, but a winner for the Dems.

There's no doubt that a nation's attitudes on these matters is a function of its demographics and history, but these things don't matter to the person being oppressed.

quote:

The Black folks that I'm talking about all had experience in Western Europe, not Russia or Eastern Europe. I'm well aware of the primitive attitudes of Russians. All you have to do is look at the actions and atttitudes of the Russian immigrant settlers in Palestine to see evidence of this. Having said this, I would bet big money that racially motivated violence in Western Europe is far less than than it is in the U.S., both percentage wise and in shear numbers. All you have to do is look at the recent history of the two places for confirmation of this. Western Europe's hate groups over the last century have been motivated primarily by religion, not skin color. However, these incidents are isolated both in Europe and the U.S., and I'm grateful that they aren't as commonplace as they were 50 years ago, and that they are national news stories when they do happen.

I try to be positive and remind them that in three short years they'll get an extra day to celebrate their history.

So, how come Asians fit in?

They're not seen as a 'contaminant' in our culture.

But to say we've accepted them is not to say they've accepted us, generally speaking. But you can go to Chinatown, or Little Tokyo, or Little Vietnam and ask them how they've adapted to our culture - maybe go on the Chinese New Year, you'll probably see more people out and about.
