What makes you support an individual politician...policy positions or personal style?

There are plenty of smart people out there that I believe would be great politicians as they have strong stances, can thing strategically and can have real world problem solving skills. Essentially they're leaders.
What they don't have is the style of a smooth politician.
Let's use LA own Robert Kennedy for example. I sat next to this guy on a flight from D.C. to NOLA. We talked a bit about healthcare- he kind of brought it up in a round about way. I could tell he was overmatched.
He made his bones standing up against Jindal's use of one time money and running until he was elected. He is a lawyer and I'm sure smart I'm sure in his own right but nothing was genuine about the man I got the feeling. His extravagant use of kissing babies in the airport (literally), engaging with people, etc.
I rather a smart MFer whose an a-hole that gets things done than some smarmy lawyer that loves power. Those people don't get elected though and when they do, they don't get power...i.e. Rand Paul

Essentially you are talking about the difference between a technocrat and a more traditional politician.
I'd rather we turn more towards technocrats but we'd have to change the way we discuss politicians and policy.
Honestly the parliamentary system makes more sense for the US as it stands, given the size of the country and the fact that many groups are diffused. It will never happen but I think it would work on many levels.

Politicians are bs artist. They vote the way their doners want them to. They will say anything to get elected.
Once in office, they do what the doners tells them to do.
People are wising up.
The MSM are in the tank for the doner class.
