What happened to, "I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death...

...your right to say it."?
That's what true Americans believe.

The establishment happened
The establishment forces compliance into their views by making it taboo to believe/say certain things.

Truth. But the left has proven to hate what America is all about.

Progressivism happened.

Well, that's gone, but more important and basically what happened to this old adage:
"Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me"
That's the one we have to get back, and yours will immediate logically follow once we get the later back.

Progressives took over the Democrat party. That's what happened.

OP brings up a reasonable neautral point that everyone (including me) can probably get behind. 4 of the 5 first comments immediately blame the left. Not that the left on a board of the opposite leanings wouldn't do the exact same thing (blaming the right).
My opinion, everyone has gotten so hostile it's impossible to have that kind of civil discourse anymore. It's a giant game of, "he strarted it!"

I make strides every day on social media. I try to avoid name calling, but i point out flawed logic and misrepresented responses, and rebut them with fairly intelligent paragraphs of factual information. Then I watch.
To your point. They almost always come back with immediate insults and slander, and almost never actually try to counter my points.
Why do I do this? I know I will never change their mind.
I do it for everyone else who comes across it and reads it. They see my logical level headed explanation, and they see rage and name calling from the other side. I've gotten top comments on some pretty famous peoples posts doing it. I know I've swayed at least a few people who were either on the fence or just uninformed on the topic into seeing it my way.
If everyone would take the same approach, maybe there would be some progress.

I posted in another thread that not all speech is protected by the 1st amendment. Even if you have permits to protest speech that insights violence or hatred is not covered.

Too many stupid people. They don't want to except the reason for having a 1st amendment in the first place. That is for protecting unpopular ideas and speech.
Popular speech and ideas require no protection. Why would you need an amendment to protect what everybody likes?

I try and do the same, it's not easy. And my results are similar. It goes both ways, is my point. Dummies everywhere.

Example #5. Thank you for continuing to make my point for me. It's the people who TRULY believe this is all one sided are lost causes, from both sides.
HailMich tried to get into this yesterday but he got more of the same one sided BS.

The ACLU is currently getting shite on by the left for fighting to protect hate speech. I'd ask my friends on the right to remember that the next time they are shitting on the ACLU for doing something the right doesn't like.

I've been saying it all day.
The establishment and progressive left is a threat to the foundation of this country

Yes, I truly believe that when it comes to shutting down free speech it is most definitely one sided.

What group has been shutting down free speech on college campuses for a year or longer? And they call Trump a Fascist.

These kids have absolutely no idea who Voltaire and Rousseau are! They don't even know Jefferson was, expect a racist slave owner!lol
