I know how to find the general qualifications for being a governor

Ballotpedia-LA Governor

quote:

have attained the age of 25 years be an elector have been a citizen of the United States, and, have been a citizen of Louisiana for at least the preceding five years

I am talking about which political allies I would need to have in either party. Is there a strategy that requires attaining key demographics in certain parishes?

Basically, I am referencing the underhanded, shady side of Louisiana politics.

EDIT: No, I am not planning to run for governor. I am speaking in generalizations. To be fair, I don't think I would be a very good politician

A base of supporters, whether ideological or geographical.

And the ability to raise funds.

Party support, in LA, is irrelevant.

You need no shame, for starters.

You have to be okay with asking people for large sums of money, knowing that you will probably never pay them back in any way.

You need to have powerful friends with money, and you use their money to buy blocks of votes from powerful friends who want money. Think church leaders.

You have to provide jobs for the children and friends of both sets of people.

Your staff has to be connected in some way to both sets of people.

In Louisiana, you should be ideologically neutral. Start from the middle, and draw from both sides.

You should also not worry about driving up debt. Louisianians hate "do-nothing" governors. They would rather see a governor who builds things and gives away stuff than aggressively save money. Leave that for your successor.

Lastly, I will repeat the first requirement. You must have no shame. Zero. Nada. If you're okay with taking $10,000 from someone who wants you to restore the coast in Grand Isle, and as soon as you leave his sight, you say, "frick that guy," and bribe a baptist preacher with the money... congrats. You have what it takes to be governor.

I agree regarding democrats. They need to straddle the fence to have a shot.

Republicans can run on being conservative IMO

The longer I live here the more that the painful truth simply cannot be ignored. Louisiana politics is nothing more than a mirror reflection of the people themselves, and we really don't like the reflection, but it is a reflection none the less.

Corrupt? Hell yeah. Incompetent? To be sure. Embarrassing? On the reg.

But we elect them. Truth be known, I've never been more disheartened than with the past mayoral race for EBR, and governor's race. I suppose that in the end, we got what we deserved. It is sad, but it is a pattern.

Vitter ran on being a conservative and loss (although he had other problems)

Jindal's first term, he ran as a moderate pragmatist, and his second term, he ran off his success in his first term (which, many forget, was full of moderate pragmatic ideas)

Jindal in 03 ran as a moderate to right person who would continue the success of Foster

Foster was a Democrat up until three months before the first election, but he would never be confused with being overly conservative.

Damn. Post made me sad at first. Then I decided it was pretty damned funny too.

1. You need the support of at least a couple parishes if you have the right last name (Edwards, Long, Breaux, Landry, Landreiu) or preferably a congressional district sized area. Some popular pipelines to the governor's mansion are:
Congressman
Public Service Commissioner
Lieutenant Governor

2. You need a coalition of backers from major lobbys which include:
teachers
Sheriffs
Public employees
Family Values
Plaintiff's Bar
Trial Lawyers (defense)
Oil & gas
Petrochemicals
Ag
Film

Republicans typically need the oil and gas, ag, petrochemicals, sheriffs, and family values lobbys to win.

Democrats get all of the others in the bag and just need to flip one or two lobbies to win.

JBE beat Vitter by flipping the family values and the sheriffs.

Realistically you need to understand that Louisiana is really three states in one.

1) North LA
2) Cajun Country - Marksville to Thibodaux over to Calcasieu
3) Metro New Orleans

Edwin Edwards understood this and knew how to capitalize on it. He understood that most of the people in Cajun Country and a lot of people in New Orleans as well as the rednecks in the rural north did not mind some corruption so long as things got done.

Do just about anything the oil and gas industry wants...or at least promise to, because it is the largest industry in the state and provides high paying jobs.

In the suburbs of NOLA. BR and Shreveport, go around saying you are a "conservative" so as you don't scare the middle class about the prospect of higher taxes and you are going to give money to law enforcement....to "protect" communities..

Tell everyone that you believe in family values and will "fight" for them as governor as you spend money on your girlfriend who lives in that garden home off Brightside

We all know why VItter lost family values but I've always wondered how he lost sheriffs and I read and asked around and it was because he threatened to take away a shite ton of money and power from their little scam fiefdoms, no word if that was going to be done though taxes, grants or whatnot.

I've been hearing that they will likely not be in JBE's corner for 2019 but we still lost a very good candidate for Governor in Vitter no matter which republican beats JBE in 2019.
