War with North Korea - The First 72 Hours

A question to our military folk here, especially those who have done time in South Korea. Based on your knowledge and training, what chould we expect to see in the first 72 hours of a new Korean War?
Lets suppose things kick off with a nuke test followed by air strikes, or a missile launch into the Sea of Japan that gets swatted down by the Navy.

No one can answer this, because no one knows that.
Game also changes with China and Japan playing along, which has certainly not been played out by anyone in this board.

Seoul flattened
This is the first answer always given and I once knew how that would happen but can't remember. Can you give a quick rundown of events? I remember Seoul would be destroyed in under 24 hours.

It all depends on whether the DPRK can get their artillery barrage on Seoul and the DMZ going before the air strikes vaporize them. If they have enough ammunition and can get it on target in time, they will annihilate the defenders on the DMZ, wreak havoc on Seoul, and potentially leave the South open to be invaded.

NK stages offensive on SK, activates sleeper agents in SK and ships/subs try to flank into the south. SK with help from US begins counter offensive within 48 hours. The US will own the sky and the sea. Troops from the South will be entering NK with 4-5 days.
I watched a war simulation of NK vs SK the other night by some military intelligence official. Casualties will be high.

I surely hope our special forces can get to Kim and the Generals who run his regime before it gets to any of that.

If US/coalition strikes first it ends swiftly with mass DPRK casualties...that fat kid is proper fricked
If DPRK strikes first, 200,000 to 300,000 South Koreans buy it within 24 hours...
But with US, RoK, Japan AND China postured...that will be about it...granted, South Korea will lose billions of dollars of infrastructure
ETA: To put in perspective though...United Airlines likely lost a billion in this PR incident...
If your going to risk a billion dollars to whip an Asian kid's arse, I couldn't nominate a better kid than the fat kid

How do you know this?
Said this morning they are training for just that.
The unknown is what bothers me. We don't know how North Korea will act as citizens. They may first strike. Their generals may have been taught by their fathers from the Korean War all about war and learned all their lives about war. Who knows.
They may be clever as a fox or dumb as a bag of bricks. Since I don't trust anything coming from the media on anything I will reserve judgement until the fight comes. If it comes.
I tend to think Sanctions and China's pressure will calm the situation down before it comes to blows.

Agree. These Tom Clancy fanfics are ridiculous. Far more likely one of his generals prefers to not be turned into Ash and shoots him.

quote:obviously not a military member but if its to be believed that north korea has short range nuclear capabilities, seoul would be vaporized which would lead to the single largest loss of life in any act of warfare and would be one of the most cataclysmic events in human history as it would demand a full retaliatory strike from the united states and then north korea would be reduced to a pile of ash. we are talking ww2 level of casualites here in about 15 minutes
Based on your knowledge and training, what chould we expect to see in the first 72 hours of a new Korean War?
if they do not actually have those capabilities, the united states and the south koreans would begin with preemptive strikes on the north korean artillery pieces and you would start to see strategic bombing deeper into north korea by the united states which would then be followed by a large scale invasion by the south koreans and the US.
north korea would begin a massive artillery barrage of seoul, would probably attempt to contest our naval power with their air force, and there would be a large scale invasion of the south

-Mass evacuations in both Koreas before the war kicks off.
-Massive preemptive strikes from US and SK take out NK command and control assets, air assets, and chokepoint infrastructure.
-Air war begins and ends swiftly as entire NK air force is shut down.
-NK artillery opens up and unleashes hell on the DMZ and population centers.
-NK and SK mechanized forces rush to DMZ and the land war begins.

Do we honestly know whether Pyongyang has that ability to hit Seoul or not?
Posted on 4/13/17 at 12:47 am to reo45
we do know that they have missiles that can reach seoul from pyongyang. its just not fully understood whether or not north korea has been able to put nuclear warheads on those missiles. if they dont, then this is a very large war with a large number of casualties but not truly, history changing, cataclysmic type shite that would go down if they do4
and thats before we get into the whole fact that its also believed they have missiles that can reach beijing and tokyo and dear god if they get some of those off with nuclear warheads
