State education officials plan to scrap a literacy exam given to prospective teachers and allow certification for some applicants who fail a performance assessment test — moves that critics warned will weaken the pool of candidates.

Reading is racist!

The literacy test has been accused of skewing against minorities and being redundant

“I think it’s important that we increase the share of black and Hispanic teachers, and we certainly don’t have enough here

Why should we let something like reading stand in the way of hiring more brown teachers!

You don't need reading unless that's what you teach

That is their only goal. Competence and results are secondary.

The funny part of this is that it would be one thing if failing the test was because the test set some really high bar for passing.

But no. Failing the test means you're spectacularly unqualified. Even barely passing is a joke.

It is reportedly just a poorly created test. a lot of the questions have ambiguous answers. Has only been used for a few years.

quote:

A practice test available for $20 on the New York State Education Department website features John F. Kennedy's inaugural address as one of the reading passages and asks questions like this one: "In which excerpt from the passage do Kennedy's word choices most clearly establish a tone of resolve?"

Another article on the test.

Next step in the Progressives progression: Getting rid of all those circles to fill in with a pencil.

From now on all standardized tests will be fill in the blanks, and those are just the questions! Answers will be provided based upon the transgender fluidity feeling of the moment. (Days are much too constrictive, fluidity should be free to be fluid throughout the day, every day.)

I would like a teacher to be able to answer that question.

Teacher's unions hate tests because they demonstrate so clearly how they've failed us.

So, reading comprehension instead of a bare-bones vocabulary or literal literacy test. What horror and indignity.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that question, and it tests a capability every educator should possess, regardless of subject.

yep

by all rights this should be an Onion article...

I guess for once I agree with Rachel Maddow (minus the election part, which I removed):

“You’re awake by the way. You’re not having a terrible, terrible dream.

“Also you’re not dead and you haven’t gone to hell.

“This is your life now. This is us. This is our country.

“It’s real.”
