This whole story is a disgrace.

Now that is a wrinkle on the situation I was unaware of - certainly that was a big mistake - wrong time - wrong place - wrong audience.

The family could have just as well denied the call if they didn't think it was the appropriate time to take it, just as General Kelly referenced in his pc.

Who do we hate more - Wilson, Ana Navarro, or that mayor from San Juan?

Given what Kelly said about what he was advised to tell the surviving spouse/parents, specifically that "they volunteered to do this job and they knew the stakes and what they were getting into", I think that the widow was obviously grieving and in a fragile state, following which that piece of human shite Wilson pounced and convinced her that Trump was at fault, thereby giving her a living breathing outlet on which to unleash her pain.

True - but I never put the onus on the family of the deceased look at "big picture" details. They may not even be aware that they can 'refuse' the call.

It is up to the calling agent to find out about the circumstances of the call and make a judgement on whether this is a 'good time.'

Someone dropped the ball on this one.

Trump made it relevant when he called her a liar when she claimed he said it.

Sure, she shares some culpability. It really wasn't her place to publicly comment on the call. But I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that she and the others in that car took the comment in a negative way. People misread people's words and tone all the time. Usually when that happens, the communicator of the message in question apologizes and clarifies their message. Trump didn't and that has fueled this as much as Wilson's comments have.

I understand not putting the onus on the family, but how would the calling agent know if it isn't relayed by the family? Whoever took the call could have just as easily said, we are on the way to receive the body or funeral, whichever it was and now isn't a good time.

I don't see how this is the calling agents fault or the President's for that matter.

This is a different call, this is with Sgt Alencar's widow, not Johnson's.

There was one person in that limo with the Johnson family who heard the President's words with hate in her heart.

Someone like Rep wilson is so wrapped up in her anti trump bias that she was going to hear what she wanted to hear, regardless how Trump phrased it. So he should apologize for that?

Good for CNN for posting that. Even better, good for the people to hear with those phone calls are like.

She even said in the video he new what he was doing then Trump accidentally cut her off. This is a normal saying at military funerals and what guys say to families of their fallen friends. It is how we explain to them they are heroes doing what they wanted knowing the risks.

What impressed me is President Trump listened to her not just going through the motions reading from a prepared script.

When she told him her son is a football player at Missouri who is on an academic scholarship he asked for more details about her son.

Then he invited her to the Oval Office if she's ever in Washington, DC. And he seemed very sincere about it.

Impressive.

Absolutely true. And do you think it was substantially different?

That's what a two way respectful conversation looks like.

A sad but needed short talk about how her husband was appreciated for his sacrifice.

People have the choice to be offended. Sometimes they look for reasons. We all have to remember that and try to step away from being aggrieved about every little thing.

Yes very engaging, very sincere.
He loves America, and loves and appreciates the sacrifice our hero’s make.

The widow even mentioned that it’s what he wanted and what he loved doing.

ETA I know this isn’t the video the Congresswoman brought out.

Kelly confirmed yesterday that Trump did say the line in question, so it's not just the Congresswoman.
Yes, he did and he also explained it was said as praise for soldier's bravery rather than making it out to be an insult as the idiot congresswoman did.

Rep Wilson's comment about General Kelly's comments tells you everything...

Paraphrasing:

'General Kelly is just doing his job....and keep it so he will say anything'

A complete lack of sympathy and trying to act like Kelly was just saying what Trump wanted him to say so he can keep his job. Nevermind the fact that Kelly himself knows exactly how it feels to be a Gold Star parent and receive that call. To Wilson he's just a raciss saying what Trump wants him to say.

Absolutely, and that's something Trump could have done instead of his Tweet calling Wilson a liar. It would have quelled a lot of the furor over this.
