The USA Women's Hockey team feels they are underpaid.

They have about three hours from now (5 p.m. ET) to confirm if they will play in the upcoming world championships. If not, USA will play with replacement players or not field a team.

USA Hockey has reached out by email to all 23 members of the U.S. women's national team and given them a deadline of 5 p.m. ET Thursday to individually confirm whether they intend to play in the IIHF World Championships that begin March 31 in Plymouth, Michigan, according to federation spokesman Dave Fischer.

Fischer, speaking in a phone interview Thursday morning, said that the national governing body will await the players' responses before deciding how to proceed, out of "respect" to the team after its announcement Wednesday that it would boycott the event and forgo defending its world title unless significant progress is made to secure what players consider to be fair wages and support from USA Hockey.

When asked by ESPN's Craig Custance on Thursday how she would respond to the deadline, team member Kacey Bellamy said: "We stand by our original position ... we just stay strong. That's the only thing we have. That's our leverage. That's the only way this is going to work and be successful, if we just stay united."

Take their revenue and compare it to the men's.

Make a clean decision from there. This isn't difficult.

They should let them play them men's team. If they win then they get men's team pay. If they lose they play for free.

To be blunt and honest, women's sports are an inferior product in general. If they were to try and play in men's leagues they would be unemployed and have no pay. Measurables matter.

I thought the whole wage gap issue was for "equal pay for equal performance".

NO NO NO

This isn't about revenue, logic, or reasoning. This is about feelings. Everyone knows, all great business decisions are based purely on feelings 100% devoid of logic.

How about this:

When the men play, count the number of empty seats
When the chicks play, count the number of empty seats

Hey ladies, that's why

The world championships of women's ice hockey is taking place in a city the size of Lake Charles.

Sports are businesses. You put a product on the field - if your product sucks, then you don't make much $$; therefore, you can't afford to pay your players as much.

They should get paid according to the viewership. More eyeballs...more pay. I.e., merit-based pay. They don't win a trophy by just showing up. Yet.

Nope. Tell the women if they want the money the men make, tryout and make the mens team. There is nobody stopping them.

You have no leverage other than public opinion.

And the public doesn't care about Women's hockey. If they did, you'd get paid more.

I disagree. This is the argument the US womens soccer team used. They said they brought in more money, so they should make more. And I even balk at that. If the men were allowed to play in the womens league, they would dominate and bring in more money by winning........

There is no barrier to the women playing on the US National Mens team. It is allowed.

However, the men are barred from playing on the womens team.

So naturally, the Open division should make the most money. It is a simple concept.

No one gives a frick about women sports in general. If they don't like their pay then we should just end the program.

Most women don't even care about women hockey. So if their own gender won't support it, why should men spend money on it?

They don't know their history. The WNBA threatened this years ago. Then they realized that nobody gives a shite about them and that they are lucky to make any money at all. They backed off.
