US Mint unveils African-American Lady Liberty

Lady Liberty has a new look: as an African-American woman.
The U.S. Mint unveiled this week the designs for the 2017 American Liberty Gold Coin, the first in a series of 24-karat coins that will be issued biennially.
We boldly look to the future by casting Liberty in a new light, as an African-American woman wearing a crown of stars, looking forward to ever brighter chapters in our Nation’s history book,” Rhett Jeppson, the principal deputy director of the U.S. Mint, said in a news release revealing the new gold coinage. The $100 gold coin commemorates the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Mint.
Upcoming coins, Jeppson said, will depict Lady Liberty represented as an Asian-American, Hispanic-American and Indian-American woman, among others, to “reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of the United States.”
