They love their $0.12 per gallon gas hike as well.
Great job, CA. Never change.

State's rights baby!

If you can get away with having a 175 million slush fund and live high off the hog, anything can happen.

Thank God a place like California exists so all the nutjobs can consolidate their votes.

Not when the school receives federal tax dollars.

I sincerely hope their secession vote goes on and secede wins. I then hope there's no federal effort to stop it from happening. No bullets even need to be fired. Let them have it and move on.

Well that's just going to get expensive. Hope the taxpayers don't mind.

You realize this would severely cripple this country, right?

Please elaborate. Short term and long term perspective.

Companies can (and would) move to other states. Might be some issues with produce cost until production could be shifted to other states, but that would eventually settle down.
California has far, FAR more to lose. Which is why it will never happen.

Not before they break it up into several smaller states. I'd like to keep the economy of the inland areas. Liberals can have the coastal cites they covet so much.

While businesses may or may not move, there is an overwhelming portion of the technical sector located in California. A lot of the technical infrastructure would suffer.
California is also the largest food producer in the country. While it is about the same as their population, if the businesses and people leave as assumed, then way more mouths to feed with a significant drop in food production by the rest of the country.
They're the 4th largest oil supplier, 11th in energy production while being 49th in energy usage per capita.
(On a side note, the #1 state in energy usage per capita is Louisiana... HOW?)
California generates 13.7% of the US GDP.
They are the second largest producer of livestock (behind Texas). They are the leading provider of fish.
California provides all the boron in the US. This is used for rocket fuel, so kinda important.
As I tell my liberal friends who hoped Texas would secede, both states are huge providers for this country and EITHER leaving would be devastating. It is painfully short-sighted to wish for either state to leave the Union for the sake of momentary political advantage.
There are some states that could leave and people would probably not even notice. California and Texas aren't among them though.

I give you the tech industry, but some of that would inevitably move.
We produce far more food in this country than we need, see farm subsidies. We'll be fine.
Oil/energy - 49th per capita in consumption is convenient, but they are a net importer of energy and are very reliant on oil from OPEC. Relative shortage of oil pipelines transporting oil from the plains is a problem for them. There have been great strides in efficiencies in oil and Nat gas production in the plains and Pennsylvania while Californian oil production, while still around 9% of the US total, has declined. As we move forward we appear to be moving towards potential Atlantic energy exploration under Trump. We'll be fine without Californias oil production which is mostly used in California.
My guess on Louisiana consuming the most energy per capita is the unbearable heat for long periods of time.
If I were a Californian my major concerns would be tax policy, entitlements, and debt load. Exiting the US would likely undo their debt profile in relative short order. They'd be forced to make massive and unpopular budget cuts. They of course would hike taxes even more. This would accelerate business fleeing California.
California leaving would also be the beginning of the end for present day liberalism in America which would allow more sensible policymaking that could spur growth in their abscence.

I just graduated from LSU and I have to say: there is just too many fricking foreign students in that school, sucking up scholarship money that could have gone to Louisianians and out of state American CITIZENS. Jesus Christ. If I thought LSU was bad, I can't imagine the shite show that UCLA, UC Berkeley, etc are.

Objectively the U.S. would be better off politically (obviously not economically) if California consolidated their votes as a separate nation.
