Turkish PM Erdogan: Syria has crossed red line, used chemical weapons

quote:

"It is clear the regime has used chemical weapons and missiles," Turkish premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

quote:

Erdogan cited as evidence the "remainders of missiles" — at least 200 by his count — that he believes were used in chemical attacks, along with the injuries of Syrians brought over the Turkish border for medical treatment. "There are patients who are brought to our hospitals who were wounded by these chemical weapons," he said.

quote:

Erdogan rejected any suggestion that the rebels might have used chemical weapons. "There is no way I can believe in this now. First of all, how are they going to obtain this? And who will give this to them?" he said.

How ironic would it be if caches of chemical weapons were discovered in Syria that said "Made in Iraq"??? I'd say the MSM would owe W at least a ball washing.

Unless it can be proven that Saddam sent the chemicals weapons to Syria just prior to the 2003 invasion, this wouldn't mean anything. Remember, both David Kay and Charles Duelfer concluded that Saddam got rid of them in the 1990's. What difference does it may if he sent them to Syria or destroyed them in the 1990's?

They should unless they want Israel to do it first.

Even if Saddam got rid of them in the 1990's the MSM will owe GWB an apology. Saddam didn't dispose of them with a public ceremony. He did it in secret. As such, the best information available was that he still had them. Kay and Duelfer only went to Iraq after the 2003 invasion. It's not like the Iraq Survey Group report was available when the decision to invade was made.

And in 2005 Duelfer issued an addenda to the ISG report that said it was possible that Saddam transferred chemical weapons to Syria before the invasion. So I wouldn't use Kay and Duelfer as sources to support an argument that Saddam did not transfer chemical weapons to Syria.

Do you that, along with the in resolutions and everything else, was sufficient to justify an invasion and occupation?

Iraq was in violation of numerous parts of the cease fire regardless if they had WMD or not.

NOt that I wish we go to war over it, just stating that certainly "justified" what occurred. The punishment for violating a cease fire is to start firing.

What was the vote in Congress? The members had access to more information than the general public, and they voted overwhelmngly in favor of military action. I believe that they felt the situation justified military action, and at the time I had no reason to disagree with them.

A "rationalization" is not the same thing as a "reason"

The invasion was justified IMO, but we fricked up the occupation part. I believe that if Brenner hadn't disbanded the Iraqi army after the invasion and alienating all the Baathist that supported Saddam, then the insurgency wouldn't have grown and civil war would have been less likely to happen. We would have been out of there in a year or two. It is one of the most colossal military and foreign policy frickups in our nation's history.

OK, that's great and all but I was talking about Iraq. I honestly don't have a dog in the Syrian civil war. That country has nothing to offer. If we were guaranteed an ally out of one of the sides then I guess I would pick them. But Assad is a tyrant and the rebels are backed by terrorist. So as far as I'm concerned they can just keep killing each other. Or not. Whatever.
