Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the Turkish Army entered Syria to end the rule of President Bashar Assad, whom he accused of terrorism and causing the deaths of thousands.

“We entered [Syria] to end the rule of the tyrant al-Assad who terrorizes with state terror. [We didn’t enter] for any other reason,” the Turkish president said at the first Inter-Parliamentary Jerusalem Platform Symposium in Istanbul, as quoted by Hurriyet daily.

My Muslim Rosetta stone tells me this means "we entered for a completely different reason."

Turkish troops entered Syria on August 24, launching operation Euphrates Shield. Turkey deployed ground troops and air power to northern parts of its neighboring country, with the stated goal of retaking areas held by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

Which version of Muslim is Turkey and Syria respectively?
Without knowing, I'd wager they are different.

My guess:

Russia and Turkey made a deal. Turkey will eliminate threats to Assad while taking land and curtailing Kurd influence.

Russia gets threats to Assad eliminated, and Turkey halts the Kurds, grabs land. Win/win.

Both predominately Sunni. Syria is led by an Alawite muslim, which is close to Shia Islam. Asaad is more of a secular ruler though. almost completely actually.

Erdogen is pretty religiously conservative, and turkey is like 95% Sunni I believe.

Both are majority Sunni and have secular governments.

I'm going to need a little more authoritative news outlet than Russian Times before I believe this story outright.

However, if this is true, the second a Russian soldier fires on a Turkish one, the U.S. and Europe will be at war with Russia. If this is true, WWIII just started...

Turkey has done an about face since Edrogan siezed absolute power post coup. They have been supporting ISIS. They will be invading Syria to take out the Kurds once and for all and supplying ISIS to fight Assad. This could be very very very bad.

I think Turkey is on the same side as Russia in this one. I bet Turkey did not even notify the US. US is allied close to the Kurds, the Turks number one enemy right now.

Global research article. Don't know if thats considered legit or not.

apparently they are working with the SDF to clear villages with a few tanks. The US is all over the SDF and most definitely coordinating this if I had to guess.

the Kurds and the Turks have been trying to hammer out an agreement like this for a while.

I really really really wish the US would just back the frick out of this catastrophe. This is so stupid.

Nah, this was in coordination with the SDF. The Americans are probably working with Turkey on this. No way they get their aircraft in there without deconfliction with the US. I am sure this is coordinated. Global Research link

Agree 100%. None of the possible outcomes are any good for us, so there's no benefit to being involved.

Yeah it could be. Probably will be. Hopefully this is just a little flexing with the SDF and not full scale stupid.

Turkey hasn't really changed their relationship with ISIS since the coup. From the beginning they were keen on ISIL and ISIL related groups.

The russians are pretty far away from the Turks at this point. Not saying it can't happen, but it looks like US planes are providing air support and US advisors are controlling it.

If everyone stays in their lanes, I think this could turn out to be a relatively small join operation with the SDF

quote:

The Syrian Democratic Forces (Arabic: ???? ????? ????????????, translit. Quwwat Suriya al-Dimuqra?iya?, Kurdish: Hêzên Sûriya Demokratîk?, Syriac: ?aylawotho d'Suriya Demoqra?oyto?), commonly abbreviated as SDF or QSD, are a multi-ethnic and multi-religious alliance of Kurdish, Arab, Assyrian, Armenian, Turkmen and Circassian militias in the Syrian Civil War. Founded in October 2015, the SDF states its mission as fighting to create a secular, democratic and federal Syria, along the lines of the Rojava Revolution in northern Syria. The draft for the updated 2016 constitution of the Federation of Northern Syria – Rojava names the SDF as its official defence force.[41] The prime opponents of the SDF and their allies are the Salafist and Islamic fundamentalist groups involved in the civil war, in particular the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the Army of Conquest, Hawar Kilis Operations Room, Al Qaeda, Fatah Halab and other Islamist groups and coalitions. The SDF has focused primarily on ISIL,[42] successfully driving them from important strategic areas, such as Al-Hawl, Shaddadi,[43] Tishrin Dam and Manbij.[44][45]

quote:

Turkey has at various times tried and failed to incite tensions along ethnic lines within the SDF.[13] At the height of one such attempts after the start of the summer 2016 Manbij offensive, Sheikh Farouk al-Mashi, an ethnic Arab former member of the Syrian parliament and designated co-chairman of the Manbij City Council, stated: "I have a Syrian ID, and Kurds have a Syrian ID. Let those people who talk against us in Turkey and Europe come here and fight ISIS. Why this distortion in media about problems between Kurds and Arabs?" Ethnic Kurdish fellow co-chairman Salih Haji Mohammed stated: "In our social contract, we say we want to have good relations with neighboring countries like Turkey. Any country that does not interfere in Manbij and our areas, we will have good relations with."[106] A fighter gave his perspective as "we have Arabs, Kurds, nobody knows how many exactly, we all work under the SDF-forces".[107]

WE shall see.
