Trump’s school-choice plan to be released soon and it looks like a game-changer

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos will reportedly provide details of the Trump administration’s school-choice plan on May 22 at a summit hosted by the American Federation for Children, DeVos’ former organization.
quote:
The plan DeVos is expected to outline on May 22 will likely be more similar to the Educational Opportunities Act, legislation proposed by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Sen. Todd Rokita (R-Ind.) in 2013. Under that proposal, which was not approved by the House or the Senate, would have provided individuals with a tax credit amounting to as much as $4,500 for donating money to nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations, which would then provide scholarships to low-income students for use at public or private schools, including religious schools. Corporations could receive a tax credit worth up to $100,000 for their donations.
quote:
Because the proposal could be built into a larger tax-reform bill, it’s possible the school-choice plan could be implemented through the budget reconciliation process, which means only a simple majority of legislators in the Senate would be needed to end debate. Most legislation considered in the Senate requires 60 votes.
In creating a school-choice plan, the Trump administration must walk a fine line. Many Democrats will oppose any school-choice plan—largely because they receive significant financial and political support from powerful teachers unions—and some conservative Republicans will be very skeptical of any legislation that attempts to create a more significant role for the federal government in education, which they believe to be a state and local issue protected by the 10th Amendment.
quote:
If the Trump administration does roll out a plan with a $20 billion cap, it would be enough to provide 4 million children with $5,000 scholarships to use at other schools. Such a plan could help to radically transform the education landscape in states that seek to take advantage of the program and would force public schools to compete with nearby public schools of a higher quality and private schools, improving efficiency and educational quality.

The private schools up here cost $15-17,000 per year.
$5,000 would only go the the students who are there now.
Trump needs to double the amount expected to be used for parochial and private education.

Sounds like a huge transfer of wealth from the public to the private sector. Will there be a corresponding cut in taxes in the event that public school funding is reduced significantly?

Right, but with the incentivization and gov't "assistance", you will see a multitude of charter and private schools popping up all over the place.

Would not have to be used at private schools.

But just as you could find a private HighSchool for $50K/yr, I am certain you could find some expensive parochial options.

I live in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Over 50% of our high school students are already in private schools. Will schools like Parkview Baptist, Episcopal, Dunham, Catholic HS, St Joseph's, Runnels, and St Michael start allowing marginal poor kids from poor schools in with a $5K federal grant? It's been my experience with many private high schools folks that parents are sending their kids to private high schools IN PART to avoid just that kind of kid. And most of the private high schools here have waiting lists and few if any empty seats.
This idea, which has been around for decades, is untenable.

Private schools that are worth a shite drop their prices?
Now if you are talking about shitty ones with pretty much zero oversight that are just there to suck up the money? Oh yea. There will be a ton of shitty schools that are exactly like that hole Deon Sanders was running.

The worthwhile schools aren't dropping shite friend.
In fact, prices will start to creep up just like they have with colleges and what the low income people will have are scam schools with diplomas that aren't worth the paper they are printed on. Get ready for a shite ton of online schools and sports factories that make up grades just to earn a buck.
