Yes, our president is at it again with his ignorance. This time he says Korea used to be a part of China.
quote:

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- U.S. President Donald Trump's apparently offhand comment after meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping — that "Korea actually used to be a part of China" — has enraged many South Koreans. The historically inaccurate sentence from a Wall Street Journal interview bumps up against a raft of historical and political sensitivities in a country where many have long feared Chinese designs on the Korean Peninsula. It also feeds neatly into longstanding worries about Seoul's shrinking role in dealing with its nuclear-armed rival, North Korea.

So they had to set him straight.
quote:

Throughout the thousands of years of relations, Korea has never been part of China, and this is a historical fact that is recognized internationally and something no one can deny," Cho June-hyuck, a South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman, said Thursday.

Didn't Chinese troops invade and occupy the northern part of the country during the country during the Korean War?

I'm pretty sure Trump just parrots the last interesting thing he hears.

If Goldennugget told him that Earth was hollow, he'd probably go and tell somebody else that Earth was hollow without even thinking about it.

North Korea had taken land from South Korea to this point:

before the UN Troops started taking things back during the Korean War. North Korea - not China

Before WW2 - Japan controlled most of South Korea - and was the stage of sooooo many battles between the Chinese and Japanese throughout history - China never owned any of South Korea though - it has been Japan > Korea > South Korea > North Korea > South Korea

ETA: I would also like to point out - even though North Korea had taken most of South Korea before the UN Forces started pushing back - South Korea still existed, so in a sense, South Korea still owned all of the area occupied by North Korea... but North Korea was simply "occupying" it - and was not controlled by North Korea, as NK lost the war (basically)

Imagine how well it would have gone over if he had told the Chinese that half of their country used to belong to Japan.

Huh? - No, Japan had control of South Korea during that time

quote:

Qing Dynasty

You mean that time during Japan's Edo Period, when Joseon had pulled away from Japan and started it's own nation only to be attacked by the Qing and taken over as a Tributary state and not as a part of the actual Dynasty, as seen by the maps of that time:

It was basically a stand off at the time, because the Qing knew if they actually annexed Joeon the Japanese would come in and wipe them out? Yeah, neither of these times was Korea actually under Chinese rule.

I think it is all silliness.

If we take the OP at face value (not arguing some lineage all the way back to Pre-History, etc) and say that the OP is correct.

Meaning:

POTUS said it

It is incorrect

Koreans retorted

So what? I do not expect infallibility from POTUS (this one or any previous). Unless Trump was saying "BECAUSE Korea once was controlled by China, it is official U.S. policy that it now is China's", I see no big deal here.

Made a historical statement that is in dispute. Regrettable. But, nothing I give a sick rat's arse about.
