The Trump administration is planning to repeal former President Barack Obama’s landmark 2015 rule setting standards for hydraulic fracturing on federal land.

Justice Department lawyers revealed the decision late Wednesday in a filing with the Denver-based Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, where the federal government under had been fighting against the oil and natural gas industry and conservative states to get the rule reinstated.

I don't know enough about the regulations, and I'm no fan of unnecessary regulations. But did the standards have a reasonable basis and evidence for their value?

At least from the brief description in the article, what they were regulating doesn't sound absurd; of course, that doesn't mean the how is reasonable.

The rule set standards in three areas for federal-land fracking: integrity of well casing, storage of waste fluids and public disclosure of the chemicals used.

Well I hope they didn't completely remove these regulations and just reduced them to a scientifically established level. Why shouldn't the chemicals used be public information?

doesn't know shite about OK, O&G exploration/drilling, nor the ruling that Trump is purported to quash.

But, post more.

Yeah I don't see how anyone could make that argument with regards to that.

If the Obama regulations established arbitrary measures for compliance beyond what is necessary to keep our aquifers and natural resources protected then they should be reduced. If they were reasonable and established through science then it is not a good thing that these rules were reduced/removed.

There's a balance to be struck between the usefulness/need for the regulation and the economic impact of it.

I don't know enough about this one.. but it does seem relatively minor

I'm a former oilfield engineer.

Used to design fracking pumps.

Find me on Linkedin. Then GFY.

ETA: I've been around long enough to know that the technology is sound but oil companies will break laws, trash the environment and risk lives if it saves them $0.05. With zero risk of prison time the execs don't care.

Intellectual property, trade secret. A lot of companies consider their frac recipe proprietary and the secret of their success (i.e. EOG). Having said that, TX req some general disclosures and if you root around you can find out what everyone is doing to a reasonable degree.

Why would we ever regulate that stuff?
