In listening to various people within the camp, Trump will be going by the U6 number.

quote:

U3 is the official unemployment rate. U5 includes discouraged workers and all other marginally attached workers. U6 adds on those workers who are part-time purely for economic reasons. The current U6 unemployment rate as of December 2016 is 9.20.

He needs to make sure he explains this before they do it.

it's a number that is more realistic; the trick will be to make sure that comparable U6 numbers are used when comparing to the Obama years

anyone think the media will play ball???

than God for twitter - right?

Well we can't use the fake numbers anymore now that the adults are in charge.

Part time shouldn't be counted as employed as it isn't a living wage, it's just a way to keep your welfare.

The BOL publishes all of the rates, so knock yourself out. It peaked around 17% during the recession and now stands at 9.2%.

How does that change the point of using the U6 rate?

Trump and Bernie loved using the term "real unemployment rate" without explaining that they were talking about different numbers. Using the U6 just gives a bigger number to show reduction, even though it isn't the "unemployment rate" everyone has been using for decades.

I think it is a mistake as it gives 10% as a magic threshold by which he would be considered a failure.

I work part-time and make a fine salary and have never replied upon welfare. I choose to work part-time. Already did the full-time gig for 35 years.

Well that doesn't fix the problem of using one statistic when the most accurate picture is derived from the numerous statistics. Each one is flawed in some way, so making one official only changes one flawed metric for another.

That's true for some, but this is a terrible generalization. If I was already wealthy enough NOT to work, I would still work; however, I would probably choose to be part time instead. But back in reality (where I'm not rich), I have a few colleagues (some PhD level) who only work part time. Their significant others have great jobs, so part time is an ideal balance for them. I'm jealous actually.

This highlights the problem with the broad generalization of any given statistic. Your situation is an ideal data point for part-time employment. For my wife and I, with a newborn, it would be ideal for our family's labor participation rate to be 50%, but it's actually at 100%--which if broadly generalizing without any context, is the ideal many argue.

In other words, the aggregated statistics, in isolation, are flawed because there are good and bad reasons for a given situation. It's statistical noise that can't be identified. When you consider all of the metrics though, a more accurate picture can be considered.
