President-elect Donald Trump’s inner circle is floating the possibility of imposing a tariff on imports through executive action after the inauguration, CNN reported. Multiple sources told CNN that incoming White House chief of staff Reince Priebus has been telling business leaders that Trump is considering a 5 percent tax on imports.

I'll wait to confirm this directly from the Trump camp or a reliable non-fake news source.

from the article:

quote:

During the campaign, Trump railed against free trade agreements that he believed brought in too many foreign goods and shipped out U.S. jobs. He vowed to impose a 35 percent tax on imported goods of companies that moved jobs overseas.

I wonder if Trump will question Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson about the thousands of jobs they have off-shored in the last 10 years.

Why would he? It looks like he wants to tax his own products. Fair enough.

Our economy and our trade will be hurt if Trump and his minions start back to Protectionism.

Wut? Please explain that. You do realize there are local content requirements per the country in which you operate correct?

Not at all. It's the exact reason why Apple and many other companies are talking about moving back here. They want our market and they are not about to abandon their sales here.

You mean Wall Street and the multi national corporations that are represented there will be hurt if their protections are eliminated or reduced.

Exxon laid off thousands of US workers in accounting, IT, and other areas and in some cases made the laid off workers train their replacements in order to receive a severence package. I know I worked with a lot of them in Dallas. Their replacments were young entry level Argentines (for accounting).

Has there been a country that became better off going from less protectionism to more protectionism? In my country of birth, a Camry costs twice as much as it does here due to tariffs. I'm not keen on spending $50,000 on a Camry.

Why would he?

Trump has repeatedly said that policy dictated that was good business. Hence, he wishes to change policy

So let me get this straight.

There are people ok with putting extra regulations and taxes on items produced in the US, but not ok with putting those same burdens on items not produced in the US?

The idea is Fair Trade.

The US will win if everything is equal. The US doesn't have to have an advantage.

So after policy change, the jobs will come back?
