Im at UQ. The 2 Australians that asked me about it were pretty cool and seemed to understand. it was really the euros and some bitch from Massachusetts who kept apologizing to those euros about America that couldnt grasp the concept. The girl from assachisetts was actually repulsive regarding how apologetic she was

Here's a test: what is the capital of Australia?

Canberra. I've been there a couple of times. It is actually a very nice city, and the Australian War Memorial blows anything I've been to in the United States out of the water, museum-wise. The exception would be the Air and Space and American History museums in D.C.

Fun fact: There are only two national capital cities that were built specifically to serve as the national capital - Washington, D.C. and Canberra.

This is true, the country people here are much more supportive (Bogans). However I wouldn't say Queensland is like Cali . Melbourne is like fricking San Fran on steroids when it comes to liberalism and it's aloft different than brisbane/Queensland

Wrong. I work with NASA on the ISS. NASA has only used the metric system since 1990.

Then you really ought to brush up on its history and the engineering and the programming used for the missions

Displays showed feet but calculated and were programmed for metric

Canberra!
Ding, ding, ding!!!

A couple of years ago I was going with a tour group to Australia and New Zealand and as we were sitting in the LAX terminal I asked the group what's the capital of Australia and New Zealand.

I got 7 answers Sydney and 4 for Melbourne.

For New Zealand I got 11 answers for Auckland.

Nice, hope you're making it out of brisbane to explore the rest of the country while you're over there. Hiking/camping trip to uluru is a must if you haven't been. Been almost 7 years since I was there, would love to go back soon...

I'm not sure how the euros got so brainwashed into believing that immigration is a good thing. We clearly see what's going on in sweden yet they don't want to change their mind?

I can't say with authority...I only passed through Melbourne to catch the overnight ferry to Tasmania. I also only passed through Brisbane on the way to Cairns. I just got that west coast vibe about the whole state. I was a New South Welshman. The best years I spent there were in the country and not in Sydney. The country folk were a lot nicer. The best way I can describe them is to say Australians are the rednecks of the British Empire.

And Astana, Kazakhstan.

Back in the mid-1990's after the Soviet Union broke up, the President of Kazakhstan said one day "Let's build a new capital city for our country. Ready.....GO!"

And they did.... (I've worked there.)

"Astana" actually means "capital city" in the Kazakh language.

Yeah I'm planning on diving up in cairns a few times, and go skiing around melbourne in june. Also trying to go on this 10 day outback camping trip later in march. This should be a great a time!

Well, shite. I get homesick for the place sometimes. I'd kill for a Pub Squash and a Four and Twenty pie about now. A feast for the poor Australian.

I remember in 2008 seeing Obama stickers all over England and Ireland and wondering why in the frick they cared so much about who our president would be.

Keep an eye out on airasiax for cheap flights to all over asia/australia out of the gold coast airport OOL (forget how long the train ride + bus take (1.5 hrs?)) or brisbane. During the night of the river fest where they light the river on fire I got hammered in the city, made it back to my place and booked roundtrip tickets to tokyo for $400. Woke up the next morning and saw what I had done . You can also get to Auckland for around $150. If you need some help browsing flights I'll be on the travel board

Don't fret. Aussies have unnaturally high opinions of themselves.

Will do . There are worse ways to spend 400 bucks other than a drunk round trip to Tokyo

I didn't find that to be the case at all. They are very self-deprecating.

An example: As I was going through their immigration/passport control at the airport the officer asked me if I had any felony convictions.

I replied, "I didn't think that was a requirement to get in any longer." (Australia was Great Britain's largest penal colony after the American colonies declared independence where they shipped their convicts to that they didn't want to feed and house any more in Great Britain.)

He broke up laughing and even told the officer in the booth next to him what I said. He stamped my passport and told me to enjoy my stay.
