Donald Trump's hunt for a secretary of state is veering into dramatic terrain, with the president-elect summoning Mitt Romney back for a second look as a top aide leads a public pressure campaign against the pick.

Trump has a follow-up meeting Tuesday with the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, who has become a symbol of the internal divisions agitating the transition team. He also plans to sit with Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. On Monday, Trump spent an hour with retired Gen. David Petraeus, a new contender.

Aides were divided over Trump's choices, particularly the prospect that Trump could tap Romney for the top-tier diplomatic post. In an unusual public airing of internal machinations, Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway on Sunday warned that the president-elect's supporters would feel "betrayed" if he tapped Romney as secretary of state.
quote:

Pence, who is heading the transition effort, is said to be among those backing Romney for secretary of state. Romney was fiercely critical of Trump throughout the campaign but is interested in the Cabinet position, and they discussed it during a lengthy meeting earlier this month.Other top Trump allies, notably Conway, have launched a highly unusual public campaign against a Romney nomination. Conway's comments stirred speculation that she is seeking either to force Trump's hand or give him cover for ultimately passing over Romney.

I still like the potential for Petraeus myself.

I get the feeling that Trump thinks it's better to give Mitt a high profile job than to have him out there trying to undermine him for the next four years. I don't really like the idea of Trump rewarding a guy who was so vocally opposed to him, but I do see the benefit of bringing him onboard. He's gonna have enough to deal with from the left and the media in this country, without Romney out there keeping the NeverTrumpers stirred up

Mitt should not have been considered from the outset.

Petraeus or Mittens

I believe Mittens gives Trump some cover with Russia. Think Trump needs a counterbalance on his foreign policy team and he knows that. Petraeus is probably window dressing but it's nice seeing Romney squirm.

I think today is the day Trump tells Mitt he was just trolling him and he has no shot.

Just like coaching staffs squabble on who to draft. When it comes to the media and Trump, the media will always make it to look like the glass is three-fourths empty when discussing Trump.

This along with Romney likely being a good pick. I have to wonder if this "drama" is being done on purpose.

You don't invite someone to lunch or dinner (NYTimes says dinner) everybody else lunch. So, it's probably lunch. unless you have a plan to hire them in some facet, no?

Kellyanne Conway will not be a member of the Trump Administration for much longer.

Mitt Romney will be leading the State Department in 2017.

That's just the reality. Jared Kushner is slowly pushing Kellyanne out of the revolving doors at Trump Tower. That is happening.

Yeah, nothing like putting a failed general and disgraced CIA head in charge of our Diplomatic services!

He should ask Romney to head the VA, maybe he can clean that shite up. About the only position he should get, after the way he acted.

True, BC. And what does it say about Romney (his former personal critiques of Trump) when Romney they goes to work for the guy he disparages.

If Rudy does have 'problems'...I like Patraeus. Rudy is far more likely to take a machete to the State Dept. Prog Operatives than any of the others. And that will go further toward advancing National interest than anything (diplomatic) that a Trump SOC could do.

I give Trump benefit of the doubt; but I don't trust Romney. First time Trump sends out a PC busting Tweet...Mittens heads for the hills.
