Trump blasts General Motors: Make Chevy Cruze model in US or 'pay big border tax

"President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday attacked General Motors in a tweet, claiming the auto giant is making a Chevy Cruze model in Mexico and then sending them to U.S. dealers tax free.
"General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A.or pay big border tax!" Trump said on Twitter."

Protecting US jobs and US workers used to be the policy of the federal government. We need to get back to that.

Didn't we bail them out? Were there no stipulations they agreed to when we did that?

Everybody buy your cars before Inauguration Day!

When the right finally takes care of the Unions the left will never win another national election.

You expect that from the same group of clowns that negotiated the Iran deal?

GM is horrible. I worked at the Southeast GM regional office during the bankruptcy. The corporate culture is, shall we say, bankrupt.
Right before the bankruptcy GM had 900,000 cars in its dealer pipeline -- 600% of the optimal load. Why? None of the heads had the nerve to do the right thing and send the factory workers home.
Once they got $50 billion in cash and $25 Billion or so in tax credits from Uncle Sam, the first thing they did was make all the dealers make cookie cutter show rooms at great expense and get rid of the "Mr. Goodwrench" brand first used in 1974. They new thing was "Certified Service" - no improvement in value at all, but very expensive to implement across 4,500 dealers.
GM spent a Billion dollars on the Volt. There was no way they were going to make that money back on the Volt. It was just a cool thing and they wanted to do it.
I was a contractor. Some of the GM employees were nice enough, but it was all I could do to be in the same room with some of them.

After the 2020 Census the left may not control congress for 10 to 20 years.

How many people are buying a Chevy Cruz to begin with?
Last time I stepped onto a Chevy lot, as opposed to dead brands like Pontiac and Saturn, the sedans were being slashed because no one bought them, just the trucks and sports cars. They were making them just to game the system to meet the federally required MPG for the entire fleet based on what I saw because the only people buying them were rental lots.

Gee that does not sound like a free enterprise, capitalist to dictate to a business that they produce their cars where he says or face a tax.
Trumpkins remind me how this coincides with free market capitalism?

Why do you say this.

They also make them in Mexico, and are redirecting production there:

General Motors Co (GM.N) will build its next-generation Chevrolet Cruze small car in Mexico, the company said on Monday, as automakers look to expand there to take advantage of low labor costs and free trade agreements. GM will invest $350 million to produce the Cruze at its plant in Coahuila, as part of the $5 billion investment in its Mexican plants announced last year

BTW...if you actually read the article, it notes that GM has production facilities elsewhere, so that transportation/delivery would be cheaper in regional markets (e.g., China, Australia, S. Korea).
That purpose/advantage does not exist for a plant in Mexico (especially one right on the Texas border) - other than for import into the US market.

One of the things GM does and the other OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) may also do is ration cars to the dealers.
You want a Corvette? Order 2 Cruzes and a Spark. Want some new Camaro’s? Take a couple of Malibu’s too. And of course the GM way is definitely their way or the highway, not to coin a phrase.
We used to have these conference calls with 500 people on them. At least your phone couldn’t ring. We had one when they rolled out the Volt. The Volt has a 1.4 liter gas motor, the same one as the Cruze. If you drove around home only and charged up every night, the gas motor might never come on at all. That was the big selling point. The gas motor only charged the battery of the electric motor.
So one on of these giant phonecons, someone asked, “If the gas motor never comes on, how do you get the gasoline out?” The briefers had no idea. No one in Detroit knew the answer.
Turns out that the car computer knows when the gas was added, and after a full year, the gasoline motor will come one automatically and burn the gas out. There is a warning on the dash to tell the driver this is happening.

I have no way to know for sure but I've always suspected that some executive had invested in one of the aluminum clad panel companies that they forced the dealers to purchase.

For those who don't know, gas can expire. After a certain period it no longer burns, and is non-flammable.
WP, sounds like typical poor manufacturing. Not the feature, which sounds fine, but the company structure and communication. When I was a project manager for a manufacturing company, I rarely went into a meeting and NEVER into a major briefing without my project engineer, a guy with an associates degree in ME and 20 years of experience. Best engineer in the company too. We rarely had a question we couldn't answer, commercial or technical.

Trump speaks the truth, every other source of information, including GM in this case, is fake or lying!!!
quote:
General Motors defended itself Tuesday from a Donald Trump tweet attack, saying only a "small number" of one Mexican-made Chevy Cruze model is sold in the United States.
"All Chevrolet Cruze sedans sold in the U.S. are built in GM's assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio," the company said in a statement. "GM builds the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback for global markets in Mexico, with a small number sold in the U.S."
.....
GM told CNBC it sold about 190,000 Cruzes in the U.S. in 2016. About 4,500 of those, or 2.4 percent, were hatchbacks made in Mexico.

I do not think they shut down the Lordstown plant. I thought the Cruze was made there in Ohio.

I disagree with this statement. However, since you are opposed to capitalism, and you view it this way, then you are obviously on board with this policy. Right?
