“Let me be clear, China put an enormous focus on manufacturing, in what you and I would call vocational kind of skills,” he said. Cook blamed America for Apple’s need to move production offshore: “The U.S., over time, began to stop having as many vocational kind of skills.”

He's not wrong. That's just not the main reason they use China

Yep, many millennials don't want factory jobs for a fair wage, they believe they all deserve things they haven't earned

Let's face it, the American consumer voted to move manufacturing overseas when they started to overwhelmingly buy cheaper foreign goods over more expensive domestic ones. What's the alternative, force the American consumer to buy more expensive products through tariffs on foreign imports?

What would that do to inflation?

And he's RIGHT!!!!!!

"Kids, you MUST go to college. You will be a failure without a college degree. You are expected to attend college or it would be a disappointment! What, do you want to end op at a vocational school? Wanna go to ITT Tech?"

We did this to ourselves and it will take a generation of rethinking this bullshite "college is for everybody" stance" to reverse course.

Easy access to college has killed off vocational skills and watered down college degrees

I think he's correct here. Do you disagree?

We're all but abandoning vocational education in favor of the misguided belief that everyone will benefit from and is well suited for a four year university.

fricking Breitbart is just as disingenuous with their titles as some people are on this board:

quote:

Silicon Valley Bows to Trump: Apple to Build iPhones in America

^^^That is an outright lie.

Also, you quoted this part:

quote:

“Let me be clear, China put an enormous focus on manufacturing, in what you and I would call vocational kind of skills,” he said. Cook blamed America for Apple’s need to move production offshore: “The U.S., over time, began to stop having as many vocational kind of skills.”

and most people here agree. Breitbart followed it up with this comment though:

quote:

It seems that since the election of Donald Trump as President, Apple and soon the rest of Silicon Valley may have discovered that America does have enough skilled workers to make high-tech devices.

So is Tim Cook right or wrong?

I blame liberal arts colleges for a lot of this coupled with the notion that everybody should get a college education bullcrap.

tim cook omits how much cheaper it is to operate in china. The labor costs are just the tip of it, they have very few environmental regulations, or labor laws.

Apple didn't move to china for vocational skills, they moved to china to save $$ and hassle. apple started manufacturing in asia in the 1980s!

I think he makes a large point that is valid (the move away from technical/vocational skills) but specifically applied to Apple it is BS.

What kind of vocational skill does it take to assembly an iPhone? We are not talking about the chip manufacturing here.

But iPhones are the most expensive phones, right? Generally speaking.

That has nothing to do with what we did to ourselves.

We just decided to buy foreign goods over American ones. We voted with our dollars.

Exactly! Tim Cook's response is a deflection. And a good one given the kernel of truth (the need for vocational training) contained in it.

Being a 12 year old with great concentration probably helps.
