I follow politics pretty religiously, like I'm sure most of us that frequent the Poli Board do. In the last twenty years, I can't think of a single instance where the CBO has been right. Can anyone else?

To me, it's a joke. I never believe any number the federal gov't puts out with the exception of the census.

Goes with my point. If they are the end all be all let them propose legislation for debate in Congress.

Keynesians.

Ironic how the left holds the CBO up as darlings when the same MSM/DNC bashed some of their stimulus scoring back during the Obama regime.

I only wonder why you grant an exception for the census.

Mainly, because everyone I know was directly touched by a census taker. I think its the one thing they actually attempt to calculate correctly. I'm not saying it's 100% accurate, but I think their product is way better than anything the CBO has ever put out.

In the last 20 years, what instances can you think of where the CBO weighed in at all? I'm curious what precisely you think they have gotten wrong, and in those cases I'd really like to know who offered a quantified estimate that turned out better.

A clear indication of their evenhandedness is the fact that partisans from all sides take turns taking shots at them. Meanwhile, others that put actual hard numbers out there to be judged are unsurprisingly scarce as frick.

The CBO used to be non-partisan and trustworthy. Now they are just a facet of the propaganda campaign. They produce numbers for the media to report on to produce the desired groupthink effect.

My favorite most recent example is them projecting a deficit of about 600 billion the last fiscal year.

We added over 1.4 Trillion to the debt.

That's some seriously shitty work.

Did map data in 2009 for the 2010 census.
Would not repeat. Rural people and illegals do not want census folks mapping them.

They're about as accurate as a meteorologist predicting the weather 2 weeks in advance.

What is event he point of the CBO? It's not like anyone in Congress has ever said "oh the CBO says we can't afford this, well never mind then?"

I am not defending the CBO but I can weigh in on estimation techniques. They are not an exact science. Also, they are usually predicated on a list of logical assumptions...which means they work a lot better in organizations that are actually working together. Our government has two adversarial factions that frick each other over for political expediency on every major new initiative.

If the CBO is so damn smart, why don't they come up with a wonderful healthcare law?

You want hired analysts, and not elected legislators, writing your laws?
