adios, Kerrygold butter

quote:

In 1970, a law was passed which required that all butter intended for commercial purposes within Wisconsin first be put before a panel of "experts" responsible for grading the product based on a set of state standards. This law, which had largely been forgotten or at least ignored for decades, has now become an issue once again thanks to the rise of high fat diets.

For those who subscribe to high fat lifestyles such as the Paleo, Primal Blueprint, or Ketogenic diets, butter usage is strongly encouraged, so long as that butter is grass-fed. This has caused market demand for grass-fed butter to skyrocket over the last several years, alarming Wisconsin food bureaucrats who cannot stand to see a rule being broken, no matter how arbitrary it may be.

quote:

Wisconsin apparently takes its role as the “butter police” very seriously. The regulatory process that explains how butter is to be inspected and assessed before making it onto store shelves is several pages long and includes 32 “quality points” that each butter specimen must meet before gaining state approval.

Anyone caught bypassing this process is subject to a $1,000 fine and up to six months of jail time.

Some Wisconsin residents, Jean Smith included, worry that this butter statute has more to do with protecting the American dairy industry and less to do with protecting consumers.

quote:

In Wisconsin, a state known for dairy products and especially cheeses, the dairy industry has a great deal of pull with local legislators. This pushback against foreign butter is just another example of state and private entities coming together to form a more cronyist union. Rather than allowing free and open market competition, the government is protecting an American industry from having to innovate and compete with foreign markets.

On a barely related note, that movie was surprisingly good.

All Kerrygold has to do is submit to the grading so that it can be labeled according to the state regs.

This is from the Wisconsin Department of Ag
quote:

If you eat a meal in a Wisconsin restaurant today and want margarine instead of butter, you must request it. Butter is so important to us that Wisconsin law forbids the substitution of margarine in lieu ??of butter in a public eating place. Likewise, if you are a student, patient, or inmate in a state institution, you will be served butter with your meals unless a doctor says margarine is necessary for your health.

Butter is serious business in Wisconsin

as someone that spends about 2 weeks every year in Wisconsin for work, I can attest, they do not joke around with their dairy

it's akin to our debates about how to boil/season crawfish

they are passionate

they also introduced me to the best bar drinking game of all time: Hammerschlagen

I was trying to find a meme with Marlon Brando and the 'butter scene' from "Last Tango in Paris" but none were translatable or ban-proof...so just imagine that I posted such a meme.

Well this is a prime example of why I think many "small government = local government" supporters miss the mark.

It's not that state or local government is less incompetent or nefarious; we're just less likely to be impacted by their incompetence and nefarious nature.

Not to mention we can determine, in those unfortunately all too uncommon instances, which policies may be useful as it's easier to tease things out on a smaller scale with controls.

But in the end, the problems with government and power are not exclusive to the level of government.

Doesn't impact people outside of Wisconsin though? I'll keep loading my food up with grass-fed butter down here.
