They absolutely represent a sizable portion of the left, which is why they can be seen doing this in city, after city, after city. You don't see anything remotely comparable on the right.
These people are also present in spades on social media spewing their leftist, hateful garbage.
Trump rally attendees were assaulted on numerous occasions all across the country, and it was tacitly explained away or implied that Trump's "incendiary language" was to blame, not the protesters hurling obscenities, threats, and physical violence on people who merely attended a political rally.
That the mainstream left has not been more vocal or critical of these people and their actions has only fueled it to continue and expand, thus the mainstream left who do not actively promote or take part in these actions have played no significant role in distancing themselves from it nor in putting a stop to it.
You own it and history will bear that out.

But: no, sorry, you can't just disavow these little monsters. Your side embraced, cultivated and encouraged them, and gave them at least implied approval to behave as they are currently.
I'm still a registered Dem, but I voted Trump because I saw this wave coming, and don't condone or accept this. The Democrats don't represent me anymore, they have alienated a lot of their traditional base by shifting to extremes, and they will pay the price politically for this. I've not yet decided whether I will switch parties (I do have issues with alt-right agendas), or if I will attempt to fight for my current party's soul. Sadly, although I would love to see the party reformed, I think it's too far gone at this point, and it's going to have to burn before it can come back.
