Supreme Court takes up case that will devastate public sector unions https://thinkprogress.org/scotus-case-devastate-unions-ce0dc152813a/ …

Just so we're clear what's going on here, the GOP is using its stolen SCOTUS seat to devastate a major source of Democratic political power. https://twitter.com/imillhiser/status/913403606644215808 …

The justices will hear the case of Mark Janus, an Illinois state employee who objects to paying fees to the union, which represents 35,000 state workers. The decision, due by next June, could prove a costly setback for public-sector unions in 22 states, including California, where such fees are authorized by law. Labor experts have predicted a significant percentage of employees would stop supporting their union if given a choice. The other 28 states have “right to work” laws that forbid requiring workers to join or support a union. With smaller numbers, public employee unions would lose some of the political power that has made them major forces in some states, such as California, Illinois and New York.

Early last year, the court’s conservatives were poised to strike down these so-called “fair share” fees in a suit brought by a California schoolteacher. But Justice Antonin Scalia died unexpectedly in February, leaving the court split 4-4 and unable to decide the case of Friedrichs vs. the California Teachers Assn.

You know public sector unions are indefensible when legal scholars sound like Hank Johnson trying to discuss them

This will not only upend a lot of democrats, but it will cut off a primary source of funds for many organized crime groups.
Organized crime always supports democrats due to their tenacious support of labor union laws.

Nobody should be forced to join a union just in order to work a job. I was union for 42 years, still am actually. Never voted the first time for a democrat on the national or state level during those years.

They should be given that choice.

Not for all industries. The Railway and Transportation Act (might have the name wrong) is a bitch.

Good. They are useless now. All they do is trick members into thinking that they are being fought for. In reality it just makes it harder to fire people who deserve to be fired and lowers their wages because they have to give money to their union.

So if there are too many people in the union it might just.... tip over?

Move to a state that doesn't force you to join a union?

You mean when you don’t force people to do things, they may not do exactly what you want them to do?
