re: The Cory Booker SNAP Challenge
This is the stupidest thing I have heard of this week. Anyone could survive off one week of food stamps. Anyone could survive off of one month or 25 years of food stamps.

The only point seems to be a- Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson: type of sit in, kind of thing. I think both have said they would starve themselves until all the faux racists are thrown in the ocean. It is their race-baiting mantra of skills.

Booker is being a media whore doing a publicity stunt.

Booker should lose his job then his home in foreclosure, then his health care and not be able to find a job. Then see what it is like to try to utilize COBRA and pay 900 bucks a month to continue his health insurance. Booker should be a middle class white person right now if he wants to show true discrimination of today.

Isn't that kind of the point? Give you enough money to survive?

This

Shouldn't the real "food stamp challenge" be finding a job so that you can get off of food stamps?

You're fricking insane

Pepperidge Farm cut meat for 1/2lb = $2.50 (that's the good shit)
Store brand sliced cheese 8 Slices = $1.50
Loaf of Bread or Bagels = $1.50

That's enough to make 6-8 sandwiches @ $8

And going back to your "cheap shit" comment... So people on govt assistance should have the good shit???

I don't eat the "good shit" half the time and I pay for my own food, so why should they? I live within my means.

Live a week on $28? One person? Easily done.

Live like a king on $28? Would require a job, which is the point. Food stamps shouldn't be comfortable.

I know families living on $800-$900 in food stamps a month, which is more than double our monthly food expenditure and we eat well.

Somehow when I said the same thing (in different words) I was not quoted nor was the obvious point taken by silverspurs.

The other fools in here drooling over Booker is laughable.

Usually people who whine that we don't do enough for the poor, have never been poor.

re: The Cory Booker SNAP Challenge
They get a LOT more than $28 a week, and they buy the best meat, ice cream, pies, cakes, ribs, steaks, etc. The guy that paints our buildings gets $300.00 a month, his un-married daughter with 2 kids gets $250.00 a month, that's $550.00 a month. The guy that cleans up the sidewalks and parking lot gets about $600.00 a month. Got a wife and 4 kids, one in a wheelchair who gets extra. No $28 a week. He sells $300.00 a month of his food stamps for $100.00 to get cash to pay a cell phone bill and buy cigarettes. I've seen him go do it while working on a building for us.

It was in response to some exchange Booker had with someone on Twitter I think.

As "C" asked what is the point? Is there a governance message or is this like reality TV?

Undertaking what is referred to as the #SNAPChallenge began with a social media-based conversation on Twitter. A Twitter user tweeted me her opinion that "nutrition is not the responsibility of the government". This comment caused me to reflect on the families and children in my community who benefit from SNAP assistance and deserve deeper consideration. In my own quest to better understand the outcomes of SNAP assistance, I suggested to this specific Twitter user that we both live on a SNAP equivalent food budget for a week and document our experience.

A simple conversation on Twitter drew me into the #SNAPChallenge I am beginning today. My goals for the #SNAPChallenge are to raise awareness and understanding of food insecurity; reduce the stigma of SNAP participation; elevate innovative local and national food justice initiatives and food policy; and, amplify compassion for individuals and communities in need of assistance. Over the next seven days, I plan to highlight the voices of people involved in local food policy, the SNAP program, and other related initiatives.

So from his goals, I don't think we'll get a fair look at SNAP. He wants to encourage their use and expand the funding; not reduce it's use or decrease the funding. Glad to see he is being a responsible steward of the publics tax dollars...

re: The Cory Booker SNAP Challenge

I could easily eat off of $28 a week...

Sandwich meat, bread, cheese, etc = about $8
Boxed macaroni = $1 a box (3 boxes)
Oatmeal = $3 for a pack of 6
Cheap Pizzas = 1.19 a piece (3)
Canned foods = $1 a can (5)

That's around $24 after tax and I could easily live off of that...

I couldn't. We average about $150 a week for two, but you can guess how much we spend on cheese, nuts, seafood and organic vegetables.

In college, my monthly food budget was around $50, and I was a vegetarian for some of those years. It was pretty easy, I would cook a pot of beans on saturday and that would feed me for 4 or 5 days. I had it down where I could make the pot of beans for under $2, throw in a packet of tortillas ($1) and a lb of cheese ($5), and 3/4 of my meals would be covered for $28. The rest went to cereal, eggs, milk and what not. I am sure my friends loved how much I farted.

I couldn't go back to those days though. I have gotten sfot

But you don't need to, you pay for your own food.. But your college years show that it is very much possible for people to live off of what they mooch out of the system.

I think you would be surprised on how hard it is, we have seen some serious food inflation.

And sure, you can get 6-8 sammiches for $8. But that would last me 3-4 meals, without more protein, and veggies in the mix. For $24 doing sammiches, I could get me at most 12 meals. And there are 21 meals in a week.

that was almost 20 years ago.

I would be 100% behind getting some reform in the system around food stamps. The big thing I think we should do is restrict what you can buy with food stamps. You can get prepared food with food stamps which should be a non starter.

But I don't think we should cut funding. We really don't spend that much on food stamps, and I really don't want to see anyone go hungry. Sure there will be fraud and abuse, but there are much bigger targets (MEDICARE) that are bigger sinks, and should be attacked first.

There should be a stigma associated with participation.

It appears to me the goal is to expand govt care, not have people mobile among classes.

re: The Cory Booker SNAP Challenge
The SNAP monthly benefits per person in New Jersey, as of November 9, 2012, is $133.26, or $33.32 a week.

It is real simple for a single person to live on $33 of food a week.
