The Confederate Flag...Time to Let It Go?

If we are to ask black people to stop bringing up slavery as an excuse or reason for whatever ails them, then I think it's time we stop trying to protect a flag. Yes, to many people it's a source of pride. My family fought on that side of the war. They were honorable and proud, but let's allow the past to die.
Can we reach this compromise? Or is that too much to ask?

First, liberals will never allow blacks to stop bringing up slavery. It's too good for their business.
So there's that
So there's that

Whoa, let's not go full cuck here.

I hate the flag and what it represents, but 1st Amendment allows anyone to fly it if they want to.
It absolutely does not belong on government buildings.

Ok, I didn't expect much else. I've attended dedications for monuments named for my Great Great Grandfather. I just don't see the point in either side clinging to the past.

I say let them fly it. Makes it easy to spot the trash.

Its just a flag, and it's a part of American history. That is ALL it is, nothing more nothing less. It only becomes something more when you ascribe more to it than what it is.
If it's a symbol because the Klan used it, then by all rights you have to include the American flag with it as well, because they've used it just as much.
It will become a historical piece of cloth again when you stop worrying about it and putting it up as a symbol of racism. The real symbol of racism is the human heart, that which we would rather not fixate on since it's the real problem, not some damn piece of colored cloth waving on a flag pole or whatever.
Time to grow up America.

This.
As for the flag, I really don't care about it. I think many people don't want to give in on it because it has never been, to them, a symbol of racism. And, to give in would be to basically accept what they don't believe is true.
The truth is that getting rid of the flag will literally accomplish nothing. It won't help race relations at all.

I don't own any confederate flags or any sort of confederate flag memorabilia. I'm not "proud" of the confederate flag. But it's a part of history and I think it should remain visible. We shouldn't try to hide history.

It's become so stigmatized that if you're flying it - you are ostracizing yourself from polite society.
So it hurts no one but the person flying the flag.
If people want to hurt themselves, there's no law against that.

They'll never give up on slavery, and I'll keep the flag if I so desire.

I guess I was just posting a hypothetical. I hate that the flag is brought up as a symbol of white supremacy, that an entire race sees a flag as a symbol of hundreds of years of enslavement. I don't like that either side clings to symbols and memories of the worst period in our country's history. I wish an accord could be reached of some kind, even though I know that's really not possible.
Just a wish.

They would be better served bringing up the post slavery shenanigans in my opinion. That seems to be the part people forget

Is there a problem with the battle flag?? If so, what is the problem??

I like it better that idiot racists in the south tend to identify themselves by putting it on their truck or home.

The absolute definition of ignorance. The flag most of them fly is the one segregationists brought out of retirement in the 40's, 50's and 60's as a middle finger to those working for civil rights. That's the heritage you're clinging to when you say it's a flag about heritage.

What other parts of history do you want to let 'die,' or should we say erase? And what makes you think that the people you pander to with this 'compromise' would stop here? I've seen entire decades of a country's history erased. It's not something you should ever contemplate. Ever!

quote:This. Specifically in the case of the South Carolina state house, the flag was raised in the early 1960's as a frick you to the civil rights movement. No amount of "my ancestors were honorable" or "it doesn't stand for white supremacy" can EVER change that fact. It's amazing that this has to be explained to people.

It takes a very weak minded person to get trolled by a piece of cloth. I would be embarrassed.
