Taken from the OT: Is NOLA Statue Removal to Blame?

I'm talking about the root-cause here. Obviously the alt right came prepared for a fight, and the alt left came looking for a fight.
What I am trying to look at here is where this whole removal of historical statues movement came from. I guarantee none of these people knew any of these statues/monuments even existed (on both sides), especially since it's known that damn near 100% of these people (on both sides) came from varying cities across the country. It's all organized.
It seems every few months there a new "fad" to be outraged about. I guess this month's flavor is Confederate statues. Does anyone think these statues are there as anything more than for their historical value or as a memorial? I guess maybe these KKK folk think of them as a source of pride, I don't know. This faux outrage has got to stop.

it started with the flags after the Dylan Roof massacre

It might have started a trend, but I think that guy who killed those people in that church started the whole conversation.
ETA: Salmon said it. The Dylan Roof incident.

How many years have gone by during which literally nobody noticed those patina growing pigeon beshitted hunks of metal?

Blame the democrats. They want to remove their shameful past

Yeah Dylan Roof started this and it went downhill. I hope it has bottomed out.

It started with blaming the South for segregation that was actually prevalent all across the country.

It really says something when an event so horrible and recent has become almost forgotten. I admit I forgot about this until you brought him up, I'm sure I can't be the only one.

I was with you, man. I had completely forgot about it. You really don't hear about it much. I just never made the connection until I read another thread today.

It's weird how all of these incidents stopped once trump took office

But they didn't. Violent riots, police being killed, etc.

I date the statue business -- and the realization by SJWs that it could be exploited -- directly back to this:
Monument Avenue in Richmond
Monument Avenue in Richmond
quote:
Arthur Ashe Monument
The decision to place the statue of Arthur Ashe by Paul DiPasquale on Monument Avenue was controversial.[14] Detractors pointed to a lack of correlation between the Richmond native tennis star and Confederate leaders. Some residents thought the monument should be placed at the Arthur Ashe Athletic Center instead. The monument became a focal point of racial tensions in the city around the times of its commission and its unveiling. Many of the city's majority African American residents cited Ashe's distinguished place in the modern history of the city as a reason for inclusion, while some residents and other parties rejected it as inappropriate for Monument Avenue, which until 1996 contained only statues of men with a relationship to the Confederate States of America.

There hasn't been a mass shooting since Trump took office

I'll restate what I have said multiple times. Both extremes have been losers without a cause for a long long time. The Klan, and those of that ilk were defeated with the civil rights movement. They have been mostly irrelevant for 60 years now, and relegated to ash heap of history. On the other side, the ANTIFA anarcocommunist have always been a fringe group in this country. You have to go back to 1999 and the WTO protests in Seattle to find their tactics on display in force. You could even make the case that they were a part of Occupy Wall Street, but that never reached the level of violence we've seen lately..
I say all of that to say this. The push to remove statues and monuments gave these losers a CAUSE to rally around. It's not simply a case of removing a monument, it is foolishly reopening wounds from long long ago. The problem now is that there is no Martin Luther King advocating non violence and peace. Instead you have no leader at all, just flash mobs that are created by social media. Unfortunately, foolish politicians are dumping massive amounts of fuel on the fire by clamoring to yank down statues in their cities in an effort to avoid the mob. It's just becoming a feeding frenzy.

Exactly
No leader behind their messages has gotten this out of control.
Never thought I would say this but where is al sharpton when we need him?

While just thinking of the monument scare, I remember years ago when the left was all butt hurt over the General Lee having a confederate flag on its roof! Oh the horror! Must disavow the Dukes Of Hazzard
