Step one: NOLA monuments; Step two: Confederate solders laid to rest at Arlington

Arlington National Cemetery, it seems, is running out of space. A bugler might need to play taps for the holiest and most visited of the nation's military resting places sometime around midcentury if the burial ground isn't further expanded.
But oh yes, I forgot.
Some space could be made in Section 16, where one can find buried Confederate dead and a memorial to those who fell trying to form a separate union. With today's full-out mania to wipe away visible Civil War history, at least the tributes to the South's heroes, perhaps some plots could be freed up by removing what some see as symbols of treason.
quote:Orlando Sentinal
But today, revisionists are moving to eliminate prominent reminders of the war, arguing there is nothing noble worth remembering about the battlefield sacrifices of Southern soldiers, most of whom weren't slaveholders and fought mainly with the passionate belief they were defending their homes.
Perhaps then, those Southerners buried in the sacred grounds of Arlington should be disinterred, their memorial removed. Would that finally heal the wounds of slavery? Or would it be better to continue to acknowledge that history is unchangeable, and we need constant reminders that millions of Americans had to die on both sides to begin the drawn-out process of keeping the promise of our Founders?
There are truly no limits to stupidity.

Is this guy being a smartass or are there people legitimately advocating for this?

It's from a pretty big newspaper, so I don't think satire. It's in the opinion section. He gave himself sort of an out by saying maybe we should leave it to remind ourselves of history at the end, but it's still ridiculous to even bring this up. Of course he wants people to consider it; I see no other reason why it would be brought up.

Jesus, they really want to eliminate any trace of the old South because they are uncomfortable with it.

They're uncomfortable with us.
That's why they're fighting this strange war against history. Destroy our history and you undermine us as a people.

I really don't care too much about statues and monuments. Digging up men who from their burial grounds is fricking insane. These men are dead. They paid the price for their actions, good or bad. Digging up dead soldiers, Americans, from Arlington is something that pisses me the frick off. frick anyone who wants to do that.
ETA: The vast majority of Confederate soldiers were not slave holders. Most of them fought in the war because they were afraid of losing their homes to conflict. Which ended up happening anyway. While they fought for the wrong side, they fought honorably and are, in the end, Americans.

Did he cry when he wrote that, seems emotional as opposed to rational.

Need WhiskeyPapa to share Abe Lincoln's thoughts on this before I form an opinion.

I can't imagine going through life with that fragile of a personality. Anyone "triggered" by random monuments or people buried in a cemetary 150 years ago are truly sad individuals. That has zero effect on your daily life unless you make it a problem voluntarily. Truly only a warped person thinks that way.

The poor whites who made up the bulk of the rebel armies were fighting to prevent blacks from becoming equal with whites.
That is not very laudable.
The rebel armies were not defeated. They melted away. Half of Lee's 60,000 man army melted away in 10 days.
Some leader.

They want us to think like they do, to talk like they do, to walk like they do.
They can't understand why we don't. Why we don't want to.
And so they chip away at the things that make us different. The things that make us southern.

Yet they didn't. They were more correct than ever.
States have the rights. Not the shite fed.
Look at what the fed has become. Those brave men fought against that 160 years ago, and they turned out to be correct.
