A friend of mine lived in Pitt for a while. He said the fans are like LSU x20. Losing their fan base would be a huge blow to the city.

Even if true, it's a HUGE miscalculation to think that boycotting the anthem would be viewed this way.
The reality is that, standing for the anthem was the "non political" choice. The problem was that someone, not sure who, let their internal feelings get in the way from recognizing this very obvious truth.
If what he's saying is true, it's one of the biggest PR blunders ever. And, he should apologize for that blunder...rather than simply explain it. Saying you didn't mean to be offensive doesn't absolve you from being offensive...especially if the large majority of people perceived your action as a boycott.
This letter falls short, IMO.
