There are plenty of havens for wealthy people in louisiana. Why create a new town?

Baton Rouge’s Rich Want New Town to Keep Poor Pupils Out: Taxes

What a brutal headline.

This doesn't work out well for the rich. East Dillon ruins West Dillon's playoff hopes in year one and then wins the state title next year.

Quotes from the article:

quote:

St. George would have about 100,000 residents, or a quarter of the population now governed by the combined city-parish government of Baton Rouge

quote:

The area generates a disproportionate 40 percent of local government’s sales and use tax receipts, according to the LSU report.

Do the math and you can see why people believe it would cripple the parish as a whole, and why SG proponents believe they would have more than enough revenue to run their "little" city.

The truth is probably somewhere in between.

Gawker had an article on this today too. In addition to shitting on the St. George idea the author proclaimed that the nation's public school systems would be saved if all of the selfish, rich parents were required to send their kids to public schools.

Haven't read it, but is the assumption that everyone wanting the new town is just racist?

What a pile of shite. Whoever came up with the title/article should be ashamed of themselves. We really need to re-define what counts as journalism as opposed to an editorial. The only reason the article was even written was to stir up divisiveness it appears.

I just read it. It took about as long as I expected before the author started dropping thinly-veiled allegations of racism. And, unfortunately, the proper nouns play perfectly into her hand:

quote:

“Baton Rouge is one of the best job markets around, and the middle class is moving out,” said Republican state Senator Mack “Bodi” White. “Those who stay have their kids in private schools.”

quote:

And, in Dallas, a move to create a district emerged last year. Parents are proposing a system called White Rock in an affluent area east of the city.

I doubt MSN wrote that article solely to create divisiveness.

A lot of people in education believe this.

Almost all of which comes from the Bluebonnet Blvd retail district including the Mall of La and Perkins Rowe.

Those taxes are not paid by SG residents anymore than the sales taxes collected at Tanger Mall in Gonzales are paid by Gonzales citizens.

BR will not allow those taxes to leave the city. Book it.

It is a bit of a slap in the face that St George drew up boundaries that include pretty much all of the retail districts. If you drive around the bulk of the unincorporated area, you do not see much evidence that people want to incorporate( no St George yard signs). If you go to Shenandoah, they appear to be already gone. The entire huge arse neighborhood supports St George. They should incorporate on their own. But as a resident on the other side of the unincorporated area, I do not feel like they are speaking us.

Mabshir, it's my understanding that st. George didn't draw any lines this time around, they just lumped everything that is currently connected and unicorporated and lumped it together as a proposed newcity. I think the original ISD proposed a few years ago was much smaller and they took a lot of flak for cherrypicking neighborhoods and excluding some of the poorer areas.

I agree with Russian though BR is not going to give up their cash cow without a fight. If an area wants to be incorporated into BR, aren't they allowed to petition to do so though? It would seem to be that if this were to happen St. George would have no way to dispute that even if the vote did pass.

I am hoping the mall asks to be incorporated. It would be interesting to see if St George would survive without their bank.

St George didn't draw up any boundaries, that's the ones that have been in place all this time

Yes. After a property owner asks to have his property incorporated into the city the process is:

1) A notice of a public hearing must be posted.
2) The public hearing is held.
3) The CP council votes to incorporate the area.

I live off of Highland Road between Pecue and Siegen and one of the things I am afraid of is that this area would be largely "ignored" if this comes to be; much like what the people in Shenandoah, O'Neal lane areas are claiming. We have about 169 homes in our subdivision and I have not seen any signs supporting this.

It's becoming more clear that the st George experiment will fail at this time.. I live in incorporated BR and don't desire the split to be a reality for a myriad of reasons but I can't get over the egregious temperament of the elected opponents and cries of racism being lobbed by many. It's sad that instead of addressing and working towards a solution, leaders and in this case journalist would rather blame those seeking solutions to an expanding problem within our education system.
