Call me cynical, but I think Pvt Manning becoming transgender was the smartest thing he ever did. No one will convince me this didn't make him more a more sympathetic figure to the Obama administration.

Luckily gender fluidity is a thing now so I'd play the role (short of hormones and surgery) and then have a complete change of heart once released.
