However, if tax exemption is withdrawn from one religious groups who opposes government policy, while another religious group is permitted to keep their tax exemption because they support the government policy, then you have a violation of the 1st Amendment.

I'm not a constitutional scholar but I don't see it

Congress isn't passing a law prohibiting the free exercise of religion

They're just applying the same standards for tax exempt status to religious institutions as they do other institutions. It's the way it should have always been. If some churches remain exempt and some don't then that's just the way the chips fall. What's the problem?

I have conservative views, both fiscally and socially. And even here in Louisiana I can't discuss them in the work place.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest this is largely due to the desire to keep politics out of your workplace, not because there is some huge desire to not hear conservative views. I can;t imagine you work at a place where your views would not be echoed by a HUGE percentage of people.

I, on the other hand, have to be VERY VERY careful with whom I discuss my religious beliefs, for instance...even in social situations, because to say you're an atheist in South Louisiana is not a smart move.

No they are just penalizing the ones that do not fall in line with their beliefs. They are taking the freedom of religion out of the equation.

I like booze, porn, and casual sex with as many women as possible and I support gay marriage and legalization of prostitution and all drugs.

What do you think?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

How are tax exemptions codified? Enforced?

Through (say it with me) law.

It is not the responsibility of the federal government to choose religious "winners" or "losers" using the tax code. If a belief system is superior or inferior then it will rise or fall on its own merits. The federal government does not need to intervene.

All belief systems should be treated the same. Are you against that?

But that doesn't prohibit the free exercise of religion. And you even admitted as much earlier.

So what's your fricking point?

Must have missed this line.

My point is that you are using the tax code (e.g. law) to force religious organizations to compromise their belief system.

If the position of the federal government was superior, it would stand on its own merits. Instead, coercion will (eventually) be used as tax exemption status is withdrawn from religious organizations that refuse to perform marriage ceremonies based upon their free exercise of their beliefs. Those that do perform ceremonies will maintain their tax exemption status. If you cannot see coercion there then I cannot help you.

Respect others beliefs. Even when you do not agree with them.

I missed how it is relevant

The government picks winners and losers in everything based on the tax code

Why you're all whining because religious institutions aren't subject to the same rules as every other institution is ridiculous

You don't want equal treatment. You want better treatment and you don't want to have to explain why you should get it.

Yup. Forgot that whole "consent of the governed" thing I guess.

Why does this sound familiar? Fair Share. Religious institutions aren't the same as other institutions to begin with. And what we are saying is treat all religious institutions the same. Do not try to change people's beliefs through tax code. They are attempting to strong arm any group that does not fit the narrative.

Right

Subject to the same rules

If that happens to benefit some religions more than others then that's the way the chips fall

Or they could just pay the taxes?

Please explain how this will benefit one religion over another when they are all playing by the same rules.

That's fine too. Just make all of them pay taxes. Don't single out the ones that do not bend the knee to the government.

Are you saying Churches should not have a non-profit status?

My. Point. Exactly.

Same standard for all. Too easy.

Way too easy. This argument has nothing to do with paying taxes or not paying taxes. It has everything to do with the passive aggressive nature of the government trying to control the beliefs of the people and forcing them to conform to their ideals.

I'm sorry, i typed that message running out of the office to pick up the turkey for our office Thanksgiving dinner.

What I meant to say was I can't discuss politics in public because my political views are viciously villified as insensative, racist, sexist and other ists. This method of ignorant rebuttal is propagated by the media and widely accepted as truth.
