The governmental and societal behavior they are protesting by kneeling for the our National Anthem has been historically worse in the British Empire. The hypocrisy is overshadowed only by the ignorance.

People (all people) tend to follow the crowd in their social circles. You and me may think the logic behind the "protests" is absurd, but in their social circles (teammates, friends, etc.) it isn't.
Many people just like to follow the crowd because they don't want to be scene as not virtue signaling. If you have a social media account you see it every day (from both sides of the political spectrum).
