Governor Abbott Endorses Ted Cruz for U.S. Senate

AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today announced his support for Ted Cruz for Senate in the upcoming 2018 election. In endorsing Senator Cruz, Governor Abbott issued the following statement:

“Since Ted Cruz was elected to the U.S. Senate, he has done everything he said he’d do for Texans, and more. From opposing gun control legislation, leading the effort to increase border security, and now spearheading the charge to confirm a constitutionalist to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court, Ted is a fighter who is getting things done for Texas. Voters overwhelmingly rejected Democrat policies in 2016, and I’m confident Texans will continue that streak in 2018.”

He made a 2018 a whole lot easier for himself with the Trump endorsement and being relatively quiet since the election.

Has anyone noticed that he was very uncharacteristically quiet during the AHCA fight while Trump and the freedom caucus were duking it out?

Cruz is in a good place, the U.S. Senate. Only better place for him would be in Iceland as it's U.S. Ambassador. Let him keep on driving the DNC crazy; most of the GOP knows him for what he is & puts up with him now.

Yeah, an actual principled conservative is someone "to be put up with".

We are fricked, just a matter of time.

I like Ted Cruz, he's a principled conservative, but he's an army of one in our current system

Perry is the only person that could give him a real run for his money, IMO. But I don't think he'd jump in

Like Ted Cruz, voted for him but if trump lost or even won and he joined the chorus of pussy grabber pile ons I would be chomping at the bit to vote his arse out and the GOP (which hates him anyway) would absolutely primary him

This is the answer. For a whole lot of reasons.

But all the mouth breathers told me he was a dead man walking after the RNC and there was nothing he could do to change that.

You're absolutely correct.

The only reason Ted Cruz won't get any significant GOPe challengers is because President Trump, Majority Leader McConnell and Governor Abbott deign it so.

It was always beyond his control but he did help their consideration with his relatively good behavior since his little shameless attention whore PR stunt at the RNC.

It was laughable that people thought he'd have trouble because he didn't endorse at the convention.

His "principles" sorta turned his sporting blood to piss when it came to finally bowing down to Trump. He's just another policitican who wants the constitution intrepreted like his Daddy would intrepret the Old Testament. Sorry, but I don't trust anyone who says "Stand with Israel or God won't stand with us". It is an absolutely ridiculous statement, but that shite sells in the Bible Belt.

He's got a legit challenger for the Dems though. Beto O'Rourke. Got the look. The Spanish. The likability.

Texas is changing. It used to be so blue people never thought it would go red. It isn't what it was 10 or 15 years ago. South and West Texas are Blue. Presidential was less than double digits. Cruz's coffers are empty and people don't forget how unlikable he has been.

Not great chances by any means, but there is definitely a shot at a pickup.

Sounds like a wonderful excuse for how stupidly wrong you were about Cruz and his future.

People said the same about AL, and now the democrats cannot field all the statewide positions with candidates. If anything is changing it involves the idea of southern democrats still existing.

And the big gainer in that spread was a nearly tripling of the vote for the Libertarians. Plus McEwen also picked up a few fractions of a percentage point.

Because Texas was so safely in the GOP column, many decided to go third party as a protest vote (and likely voted GOP for everything else in most cases).
