It was the issue. It was the states right. Go read the letters of secession. This debate is ridiculous. Your post is the actual attempt to white wash history.

I'm neutral on this topic because I don't really think it matters, but

Slavery was not the only issue the South was fighting for. One of the biggest ideals was "state's rights", rights to be able to own people as "property" which was guaranteed by the constitution.

Aren't both these things about slavery? lol

Because the north feared the south would ally with France and Britain, they passed a tariff against the south on agricultural trades that started devastating the south's economy to pay for the north's bills.

I've read a load of bilge before but this is among the tops.

The POTUS position had been dominated of late from the south.
The SCOTUS was dominated by the south.
The money was flowing right into the rich and powerful of the south.
You should read more.

Slavery was the main root "cause" of the civil war. Lincoln did everything he could to hide it well into 1863 when the abolishionist were gaining popularity. Then the momentum swung in their favor and he penned the emancipation proclaimation.

He tried to keep slavery out of the war because he really needed states like Kentucky to fight for the union and condemning slavery would have lost those fringe states.

My oldest great-grandparents, when alive, told us kids that we did NOT own slaves in the 1800's and only a very few did. There were plantation owners that owned slaves, not the average southerner in Louisiana. My ancestors in Mer Rouge and Bastrop, La. raised chickens and pigs for a living. Food for themselves and the public. It later led to grocery stores for nearly 100 years. Most people did not have slaves, only the very rich and they were Democrats too, not Republicans.

what an original thread discussion ... especially since our country is so unique in being the only one to have fought a civil war ...

What you people don't understand (or want to understand) is that it was not about slavery any more than it might be about tractors or some other "private property." It was about economics, and the federal government unilaterally imposing tariffs on the south to gain an economic advantage/political advantage. Most northerners didn't give a shite about the morality of slavery until their leaders made it into an issue to get support for the war. Most southerners didn't give a shite about slavery, either. It had no bearing on the majority of their lives. What did it was the southerner's belief that the federal government shouldn't be able to jus push them around to gain an economic advantage.

But, you people just keep up with your preferred, simpleton version of this. It's like trying to convince a gun control advocate that if you legally take away guns, the only people who suffer are law abiding citizens. The criminals will get their guns and leave the law-abiding people defenseless. Let me guess, you don't understand that either....lol

Has it been mentioned yet that 100% of slavery in the US existed in the north after the emancipation proclamation.

The North had slaves throughout the war while supppsedly fighting to end it.

The civil war didn't become about slavery until the north got shellacked in a few important battles and Lincoln needed to gain some traction. If McClellan wouldn't have screwed up taking Richmond, Lincoln wouldn't have announced the emancipation proclamation and slavery would've stayed intact.

We have a Winner!

If the War was about slavery then why did Grant continue to own them after that War? For the life of me I can not understand why factual history is never taught nor questioned???

I don't need recollections of old Grand Pappy when I have the US Census as compiled by the University of Virginia:

Percentage of Household that owned slaves 1860:

Mississippi- 49%
S Carolina -46%
Georgia. -37%
Alabama. -35%
Florida. 34%
Louisiana - 29%
Texas 28%
N. Carolina. 28%
Virginia. 26%
Tennessee 25%
Kentucky 23%
Arkansas 20%

Ironically the states that seceded had the greatest percentage of Households that owned slaves. These numbers aren't counting the none slave owning Overseers, Auction Houses , Patrollers ,etc.....who depended on slavery for their livliehoods.

Neo Confederates can keep up this silly game about 1 or 2% of Southerners owned slaves , but the facts are there.
