I had a debate yesterday on Facebook with a friend of a friend who insisted that "slavery in the USA ended in the 1950's," and that Jim Crow laws didn't end until "a few years ago". When I asked her if Civics was still being taught in high school, she insisted to me that she is a college graduate.

Just for the record, slavery was abolished in the USA in 1865, with the ratification of the 13th Amendment. For those keeping score, that's 152 years ago.

Jim Crow laws were overruled by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. That's 52 years ago.

I have no point other than the sharing of this information. Evidently there are some college graduates who are misinformed.

I was checking him out the other day for a list of all the fine democrats that fought segregation after the civil war who we could replace the statues of all the horrible confederate ones with...have a nice little plaque listing their accomplishments in their fight against blacks.

Thanks for sharing. I already knew this.

It is very surprising how many people do not know the timeline between the 13th and later Civil Rights Act.

Even on this board and the OT, I have had to mention it.

A supposedly functioning adult once made the argument to me that we were in the 20th century because the year started with 20.
