VICTORY: Shreveport Council Votes Down $30 Million Stadium Subsidy
SEP 15, 2017 BY AFP
The New Orleans Saints may have lost this week, but further north, Shreveport taxpayers and residents took home a major win.
The Shreveport city council voted 6-0 against putting $30 million of taxpayer funds toward the construction of a sports arena for the New Orleans Pelicans G-League team. The vote comes as a result of “healthy” dialogue amongst representatives and constituents against the proposed stadium.
Sports arena subsidies are a contentious topic in Shreveport due to the city’s long history with failed complexes. A baseball, football, and basketball minor league team have all left the city for neighboring Bossier. The stadiums these teams once used now lie empty and serve as a reminder of the economic boost that never was.
Shreveport is not alone in its failed attempt to bring economic growth with a sports team. Dozens of cities have contributed money to stadiums, only to find that the arenas benefit the team owners and select businesses but not the economy at-large. Local governments rarely ever make up the money spent on the arenas, costing taxpayers much more than any economic benefits created.
Local officials are elected to work for the best interests of the taxpayers they serve, not sports teams and their owners. With evidence mounting that stadium subsidies have negative returns on investments, other city councils should follow the example of Shreveport and vote against the proposals. Taxpayer money should only be used on services that benefit the community.
Taxpayers deserve better than to have their money spent on costly private ventures with nothing in return. The Shreveport city council made a great decision in voting against the plan.

So why not use one of these?

Why not?? The pro teams just want taxpayer money.

of all the stadium boondoggles out there, 30 mill for a DLeague team is maybe the worst

Bring the Captains back!

Waiting on the idiots that claim the Saints are worth the subsidies to post how stupid Shreveport is not to give these special interests millions of tax payer financed subsidies.

Shreveport does not need a professional team of any sport in the town. The Captains (baseball) was one of the best things going for a long time. But that was over 20 years ago and times have changed.
The CFL team Shreveport Pirates. That lasted 2, maybe 3 seasons. Fail.
AFL Battlewings. Fail.
Hockey Mudbugs. Success for a while. End result. Fail.
Continental Basketball Assoc. Shreveport Storm/Crawdads. 2 seasons. Fail.
I know they've dabbled with other teams, but I know nobody cares or cared about them.
Use the arena over in Bossier for concerts. Keep using Hirsch Colliseum for the state fair, rodeos, and monster truck rallies. Independence Stadium can stay 10% full for the WYX sponsored Independence bowl and local HS football games.

Good for Shreveport. The Benson family has been fleecing Louisiana taxpayers for decades.

Pretty sure Pensacola is getting the team...

Why on Earth would any city want a D league team? Do some of them actually make money for the muni?

Make money for the city? I'm not following you? Because they are owned by the NBA they should make money? How?

It's not often you see something involving politics get a near unanimous stance among the masses. Nobody wanted this arena. Ollie Tyler and her minions were trying to ram it through with a bunch of sketchy details. Sadly, after Tyler were going to be burdened with the leadership of Cedric Glover again.

This was one of the dumbest ideas I've heard in a long time.
Shreveport is a bad sports town and has a lot of problems that needs $30 million more than some dumb arse arena for a team that is full of guys trying to earn earn an 11th or 12th man spot on an NBA roster.

What a terrible argument.

If you are to throw money at something I would build up the symphony, the opera, little theater, and small music venues. Build and aquarium or fund an outdoor facility safari like facility. No one in Shreveport would pay very much money to attend a G-League game eventhough it is about the most elite minor league system in the country.

The teams develop players for their parent NBA team, so the costs are rolled in with that.
Now that being said, don't know why they wouldn't just use the arena in Bossier

Because Shreveport sees itself as needing a boost. Bossier is winning the fight for tax paying citizens in a big way.

Can we vote to stop supporting Benson's teams with our state tax dollars?
