Should we swap military assets with Japan in exchange for US debt and leave the area?

Japan is the second, sometimes the first, largest foreign holder of US debt. Today they hold $1.1 trillion in US debt.

One thing both the Koreans and the Chinese fear is a militarized Japan.

Is this an opportunity?

Perhaps we could sell Japan 2 of our carrier groups and maybe some tanks and airplanes in exchange for half or more of our debt they hold?

That would reduce our outstanding debt, shrink our military saving hundreds of millions and end our obligation to protect South Korea and Japan--an obligation that has cost us hundreds of billions in dollars and thousands of US lives.

Just a thought.

This is the kind of deal-making I thought TRUMP would bring to the presidency.

And that 1.1 trillion dollar debt? I'd like to think most folks could build ships for less than what our military pays... and i swear our insistence on being world police got us here. Huge theme the last 70 whatever years.

This is too simple and logical for Washington.

Well the Japs actually have to have our permission in a way to militarize again. That should cost them something.

Our permission should cost them? Sounds like a classy move for folks we hope to keep as allies, and have bankrolled our piss poor spending habits for over a half century.

Well given their history---of course.

Let not forget there is value in an instant offensive navy too. If they set out to build two carrier groups themselves it would take years.

Those military assets would go to China after they kicked Japan's arse after we left.

So no.

It's not about what weapons and assets we give them... More about where those assets end up... The USA has a bad habit or arming nations/militias and then having our own troops die on the opposite end of said arms a decade or two later.

How quickly are you expecting them to field a competent navy? This type of transition would easily take 5 to 10 years to fully complete, I'd expect. I grew up in a town with multiple naval bases... it's a lot of infrastructure and people to make it all happen.

Sure they did some awful things... but we've let iraq and Afghanistan remilitarize. Pretty sure Germany has a military, and waited under 10 years (obviously talking west germany) I'm not against the concept, just the manner proposed.

One of my favorite people did 3 years at yakasuka? ending last july. 2nd gen navy, born in Okinawa. I know they don't want us there... if we're about promoting equality, we should stop treating japan differently than every other nation we've built.

Who is "they?" The Japanese government or private Japanese entities?

But why would they buy it when they already enjoy US protection?

How about we don't sell them the carrier groups, but we give them back Okinawa and agree to build them some carriers?
