About 20 years ago I read a news article about a criminal in Chicago who was on trial for burglary when the judge discovered that he was living on disability payments. His disability "I'm addicted to crack and people won't hire me."
At least he was honest when filling out the forms but the judge had a cow that he was approved and overturned his status.

I watch the show 'My 600 pound life.' These people all get disability payments. They claim that eating is an addiction. So, why is their substance addiction OK but the drug addict's is not?

Does anyone else here think we could save a ton of money by drastically reducing what we consider a 'disability' and deserving of a govt check? If so, are we that much smarter than the politicians who could actually make it happen?

It's not that they are woefully stupid or ignorant of the problems, it's just in their best interest to give away as much of the public purse as possible.

To fix most of Americas problems we must fix "entitlements", disability, and IDEA.
That would fix our budget, economy, and education system.

But they react to votes. The disabled vote can't be that big. And they sure aren't donating to politicians since they don't work.

It's big enough. Disability has largely replaced welfare.

If by reformed you mean that there should be a stricter standard, then yeah. Far too many people unnecessarily on disability.

I'm sure the bureaucracy and support system staff and aids, community based helpers, etc, number more than the number on disability. Throw in the bleeding heart, general advocates, and the numbers go up farther.

I agree. "Welfare" sounds like you need a temporary hand up. "Disabled" sounds like a lifetime situation needing a permanent hand out.

If we're going to be paying for people's housing, food, and now healthcare then I don't know why we would keep paying disability, welfare etc. We're taking care of ppl completely so they have no need for money.

Wish we could. It must be incredibly easy to get disability because I have several distant family members who get it and there isn't a damn thing wrong with them.

I'm in the medical field and see a ton of relatively young people who have a so called disability. Most of them seem perfectly able to work but most do not. It's too easy to get a disability. Reform is needed.

My dad works in the disability legal system. By law the judge has to give disability to at least 50% of the cases he sees in a year. Future lawyers take note. If you go into disability law and suck you still win 50% of your cases

One of my sorry brothers got up to around 500. and got on disability.

Since that time us taxpayers have been covering him for 15+ years.

Including these medical expenses...

Galbladder surgery
Kidney removed
Gastric Bypass
And Now Cancer

All have been paid for because some dumbness in a government office gave him disability.

To make matters even worse, he owns a business(technically owned by his father-in-law) and pays himself cash under the table so that he can stay on disability.

Since I can't stand him, my wife and I turned him in to Social Security and the IRS.
Nothing ever happened.

You would be surprised. It is all about the bought vote. Just a little piece here, a few million votes there, disability, welfare, Earned Income Credit, etc, and that shite begins to add up like crazy. They have stole a little here, a little there, all under that Bat Shite CRAZY SOB......LBJ and his war on poverty!
The poverty rate had started a decline in 1958 or there abouts, under frikken Eisenhower. LBJ came in and phuccckked that up along with his micro-management of the Vietnam War. One sorry Bastard!

Then you probably know that one of the things obese people do with disability money is buy food. There is no way food stamps can pay for that much food.

And on the TV show they don't cook at home. They do fast food drive through. If they can't get out of bed they have their enabler get fast food.

Yes, and fix the VA disability system as well while we're at it.
