Serious Question: How did Lena Durham get famous?

I mean she's ugly. There isn't one thing attractive about her. How did she find herself in show business? I have not seen one attractive picture of her. Is she famous for being ugly like the Kardashians are famous for being slutty?

But she had her show before that came out. The book was written because of her fame. It may have elevated it though.
I am genuinely curious. Is she the offspring of someone famous. I'm pretty ugly, but not Lena Durham ugly. If I went to an audition for local theater I would get turned away.
