quote:
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That Congress disapproves the rule submitted by the Federal Communications Commission relating to “Protecting the Privacy of Customers of Broadband and Other Telecommunications Services” (81 Fed. Reg. 87274 (December 2, 2016)), and such rule shall have no force or effect.
Senate Joint Resolution 34
The vote went straight down party lines, with 50 Republicans voting Aye. 2 Republicans, Paul and Isakson, did not vote on the bill. All Democrats and Independents voted Nay.

Sad to see. This is one area I fervently disagree with Republicans on.

What did you think of this?
ICANN
... Obama’s move to hand-over control of Internet domains would give interests in China, Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and North Korea an ability to have authoritarian control over online speech. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press are said to be at risk. The Chinese government banned online news reporting and bloggers who criticize the government can be charged with a crime; even posts on social media are limited. It was reported that Russia and China are said to be working together towards the goal of more censorship of the Internet. Turkey has an outright ban on social media and it is a crime to insult the president. Public flogging and jail sentences are used in Saudi Arabia to punish those who offend the government. The article also reports that Turkey is often seen as the world leader in blocking Twitter accounts and Saudi Arabia has about 400,000 websites blocked. North Korea’s “Internet” is essentially only for government propaganda and surveillance.

So does that mean Shep Smith of FoxNews will no longer be able to post as Toddy?

I think Breitbart should fire his technology adviser, as that's not what ICANN does nor what the proposal would have allowed.

Vote for Republicans and this is what you get

I'm ignorant to this bill. The title sounds great, but most of the bills congress pass sound great in name.

Your link sucks balls. You cant have this statement
And this statement
And pretend to know what you are talking about. If the govt realizes that there is a possibility for it to happen if they release the authority, then yo just don't risk it. And if the proposal is presented to the US in that way, then the US pledges not to relinquish control. Which means that one entity does actually control it at this point in time
Oh, and this
Notice how they openly admit that authoritarian countries cant be stopped from influencing control? Giving up our part of it, only gives in to them more
quote:
There is no one party - government or industry, including the United States Government - that controls the Internet.
And this statement
quote:
The U.S. Government has made it clear that we will not accept a proposal that replaces its role with a government or intergovernmental organization.
And pretend to know what you are talking about. If the govt realizes that there is a possibility for it to happen if they release the authority, then yo just don't risk it. And if the proposal is presented to the US in that way, then the US pledges not to relinquish control. Which means that one entity does actually control it at this point in time
Oh, and this
quote:
The transition process that is underway will help prevent authoritarian countries from exerting too much influence over the Internet

I didn't think this bill had anything to do with government influence over the internet, but allowed ISP's to sell your browsing histories to advertisers. Which I think is a fricked up invasion of privacy, and only serves to allow ISP's to make more money, at the cost of citizen's privacy.
Looks like I may have to switch to a tor browser just to spite these greedy bastards.

You are correct. Though I expect Republicans to also frick up net neutrality.

That's already a guarantee. Look at the FCC chairman appointment. Bannon wants that gone.

It's pretty fricking sad that this is a 1 page thread.

tor browser?
Basically, it bounces your connection off of a ton of vpns. It was created by our government for private communications. But I'm not sure if it's enough to prevent browser history from being detected.

I'll just have to hack my neighbor's wifi to view my horse porn.
Kidding aside, it's horrible how this vote went straight down party lines.

The alt right melt over the ICANN thing was bizarre. It was so fervent I didn't really comment/argue it with people because I figured I must've been confused as to what ICANN does.
But nope, it's the IP/DNS assigners.
It's like arguing about what font to use on road signs or something.
