ill just drop this little gem off right here and be on my way...

quote:

Ocean acidification has risen by a quarter since pre-industrial times as a result of rising carbon emissions, casting a shadow over the seas as a future source of food, scientists warned on Wednesday.

In the past two centuries, the sea's acidity level has risen 26 percent, mirroring the proportion of carbon dioxide it absorbs from the air, they said in a report to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) meeting in South Korea

Let's say I believe this. What would these people have us do to severely reduce carbon dioxide?

How much carbon dioxide is emitted by the billions of people on earth each day?

So let me see if I have this right.
A bunch of scientists are placing a massive carbon footprint in South Korea just to tell us that things are bad? Couldn't they have phoned that in?

My God, we need to get off of this planet. Our children may be the last generation to survive here.

By a quarter?
So, assuming a baseline pH of 8.2, most folks would presume ""a quarter"" to mean that pH is now 6.1.

Perhaps BobBoucher is like most folks?

In actuality the bullshite OP wording belies the fact that IAW claims, "ocean" pH has dropped from ~8.2 to ~8.1. Doesn't sound quite so dramatic when expressed in standard manner . . . . and that is assuming the baseline is even accurate.

I'm shocked that absorption between liquid and gas phases we learn about in chemistry classes it true!!!

It's almost as if environmentalists, HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE frick THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT.

To be fair, most folks don't understand Log scales.

The chemistry of carbonic acid formation is pretty well understood. Whether the increase in acidity is really a problem is a different question, but the acidity does increase with an increase in CO2 absorption.

In vitro. Of course, in instance of the oceans, there is a contributory biologic equation.

and what happens to that oceanic CO2 as temperatures increase?

What about the chemical run-off of 6 billion people heading to the sea?
No effect at all?

Maybe, but what he said he also factually correct.

My guess is that CO2 absorption would go down as the water temperature increases. The relationship is obviously not linear in either case.

so.. Can I get a mass balance on this? Sounds like CO2 is going into he oceans AND collecting int he atmosphere causing temperature rise.

Im guess all the crap we put in is having a more direct effect. But why count that when it doesn't add to the crisis propaganda?

No need to guess. It's one of the few Laws of science.

It is also THE explanation for atmospheric CO2's tracking of temperature in preindustrial samples.

BtW, I agree with the previous poster's comment re: your sig quote . . . . very good!
