Welp, so much for power projection.

As reported by Combat Aircraft a Russian Navy Mig-29KUBR embarked aboard Adm. Kuznetsov aircraft carrier has crashed on Nov. 13.
The aircraft is one of the four naval Fulcrums operated by the 100th Independent Shipborne Fighter Aviation Regiment.
According to our sources, the incident occurred around 14.30Z and involved a two-seater Fulcrum in a formation of three Mig-29s operating from the carrier in the eastern Mediterranean Sea off Syria: whilst one of the remaining aircraft recovered aboard the Kuznetsov the third one diverted for unknown reasons to Syria.

I think I've found what caused the Russian Mig to crash.

The Russian Navy receives the lowest budgetary priority, and the Navy itself hasn't made carrier operations a priority. I wondered what kind of shape the program was in, I guess the answer is "not good."

I put a Bradley in the mud up to the turrent up at Fort Polk 20 years ago. It happens sometimes.

Pretty much not good although the Russians did produce a new SSN class and new SSBN. Course they always doing new missiles but immensely neglect other areas.

The plane went down on a training mission (probably trying to train a new pilot), so I'm guessing training is/was not a priority.

Kuznetsov only had four MiG-29KRs aircraft onboard to begin with, but the type is expected to eventually form the backbone of Russian naval aviation. With the loss of one MiG-29KUBR, the carrier’s air wing is down to three jets and possibly as few as three pilots qualified to operate the Fulcrum from the carrier.
quote:
Barabanov said that Russia has been struggling with training enough MiG-29K pilots for Kuznetsov’s deployment to the Mediterranean. “The main problem for the MiG-29KR is now a lack of trained pilots for this type and not any technical problems,” Barabanov said.
While the loss of the MiG-29K will somewhat hamper Kuznetsov’s air operations, the ship also carries ten Su-33s onboard. The four MiG-29KRs are the only fighters onboard Kuznetsov that were designed to carry precision guided munitions, but the Su-33 also offers some air-to-ground capabilities.

Yeah, the original article is a bit misleading.
While there may have only been 4 Mig-29's on board, the Su-33 is very capable aircraft and it sounds like they have 10 of those on board.

I'd be perfectly content to see any combined joint task force with the US and Russia broken down into the US handling air and naval capabilities while the Russians put boots on the ground.

They lost a much older Mig 29 while their "newer" Su-33 are still on board.
They're VERY lucky the Mig didn't crash into their flight deck

We were in the back of an AAV-7 at Camp LeJeune in 1982 or '83 and it seemed just about to roll over.
"Stop STOP!, "The driver's platoon sergeant was just screaming. When we crawled out the driver had driven into an anti-tank ditch and one track was almost completely in the air. All the grunts climbed out and the Gunny after basically collapsing one side of the ditch was able to extricate the dang thing.
Not the same day.
